Richard Sherley

Richard (Dick) Eugene Sherley, 79, of Massena died Tuesday, Dec.12, 2017, at Atlantic Specialty Care Center in Atlantic.

Celebration of life services were 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18, at Steen Funeral Home, 205 W. Fifth St., in Massena. The Rev. James Hansen officiated. Interment was in Massena Center Cemetery in Massena. Online condolences may be left at www.steenfunerals.com.

Richard (Dick) Eugene Sherley, son of Leroy Jacob and Jean Iletha (Gardner) Sherley, was born May 22, 1938, in Adair County. He was raised on a farm in rural Bridgewater. He graduated from Bridgewater High School in 1957. After graduation, he farmed with his mother.

In 1962, he married Mary Louise Herr in the Fontanelle Lutheran Church. Dick and Mary started their family on a farm north of Bridgewater and eventually resided in Massena. Through those years, Dick farmed, worked at sale barns, drove a semi truck and worked scrap iron. He then opened Dick’s Bar in 1991 in Massena, which he ran with his wife until 2003.

Dick is survived by his wife Mary Sherley of Massena; daughters, Julie (Doug) Schmidt of Massena, Jennifer (Everrett) Hoskins of Bridgewater and Jolene (Mark) Hensley of Massena; son Jamie Sherley of Maryville, Missouri; grandchildren, Samantha, Tucker, Sidney, Toby, Garrett, Thomas, Nathan and Seth; great-grandson Cash; sister Marlene Schildberg of West Des Moines; stepbrother Lloyd (Sandi) Fleming of Omaha, Nebraska; stepsisters, Dorothy (Mick) Lewis of Arkansas and Lois (Jon) Ehrenfried of Bridgewater; numerous nieces and nephew; other relatives and friends.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather Henry Fleming, stepsister Nancy Collins and brother-in-law Dennis Schildberg.
