Panthers fourth at Dan Christensen invite

Swank, Chapman, Hulett lead the way

LEON — A Mitchel Swank top finish and two second place performances highlighted the Creston/Orient-Macksburg wrestling team’s performance at Friday’s Dan Christensen Invitational at Central Decatur.

The Panthers finished in fourth place out of 15 teams, but were only 9.5 points behind first place Van Meter/Earlham.

Swank showed why he had the top seed at 145 pounds heading into competition by pinning two opponents in the first period and one in the second period.

Sam Chapman turned in one of the Panthers’ notable performances of the day by wrestling up a class, from 180 to 195, and taking second place.

Chapman employed superior quickness to his heavier opponents while employing a style that rendered itself more effective against larger wrestlers.

He tallied two pins and then a 10-0 major decision victory over Pleasantville’s Daniel Kenyon to reach the finals before losing to Class 1A eighth-ranked Dalton Holmes of Panorama 9-1.

“Pushing and shoving and snapping their heads. He’s not so good at shooting,” Creston/O-M coach Darrell Frain said. “ ... He’s strong enough to compete a little bit better, but quicker.”

Kolby Hulett turned in another second place finish at 126 pounds with a pin and two decisions before falling 9-0 to Albia’s Landon Turner in the final. He entered the invite as the sixth-seeded wrestler.

Frain noted the strong performance of Blake Sevier, who defeated two higher seeds before falling to Mount Ayr’s Josh Cox at 285 pounds.

The Panthers had a near handful of wrestlers who were in position to garner higher finishes, but fell short.

“They were on the edge, every one of them had chances to win, we just didn’t get over the hump,” Frain said.

UP NEXT — Creston/O-M will have a challenging home dual with Glenwood and Underwood Tuesday that starts at 5:30. Those two programs are coming off impressive showings at the Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic.

Mount Ayr’s top and bottom of its lineup pushed themselves to the best two performances for the Raiders at Friday’s Dan Christensen Invitational.

Bryce Shaha took third at 106 pounds and that included a major decision victory and two consecutive pins to end the day.

Cox pulled out two pins to start his day and upended Creston/O-M’s Sevier, who had been on a roll. Cox fell in the final by a 14-7 decision.
