Adair County 4-H names outstanding junior members

GREENFIELD – Outstanding junior honors went to Sophie Dorsey, member of the Summit Super Stars; Brandon Raasch, member of the Summerset Citizens; and Tucker (Sloth) Rohrig, member of the Orient Bulldogs. This group of 4-H’ers exhibit in many areas from Pride of Iowa and communication, to showing lambs, swine and beef. Community service is high on their priority lists as they work to help other individuals or make improvements in their communities.

Sophie, daughter of Brett and Stephanie Dorsey of Wiota, says she loves 4-H because she enjoys helping people in her community and showing her calves. Her favorite citizenship projects this year were Care for Coats and Favors for Food that she helped organize. Sophie showed beef at the county and state fair; and enjoyed her first time showing at AKSARBEN with her market steer, Oreo.

Brandon, son of Trent and Terri Raasch of Fontanelle, exhibited many projects this year ranging from beef, sheep and rabbit to participating in Pride of Iowa and the communication event. He especially enjoys his beekeeping project. He has grown his apiary this year by splitting three hives and adding two new hives. Brandon volunteered at the Iowa Honey Producers booth at the state fair by helping set-up for presentations, helping with the observation hives and being the guy in the bee suit. Brandon also thought it was fun to make something creative from a pile of junk for the Bucket of Junk contest.

Tucker, son of Matt and Heidi Rohrig of Orient, exhibited in numerous project areas this year ranging from photography and Granola Bar Bites to swine and the communication event. Tucker doesn’t just show his pigs, he has tremendous knowledge of the project area. He gave his educational presentation on “History of Yorkshire Swine,” and shared his knowledge of the swine project area as he teamed with two 4-H’ers from Plymouth County to take Champion honors in the state fair Swine Skill-A-Thon.

Time management is especially important to each of our outstanding 4-H’ers, as they learn to balance their time between 4-H, family, school and church activities. They each have favorite project areas and are ready to try new challenges and learn from their experiences. They have the desire to set goals and the drive to reach those goals. They know the value of community service and helping others. Each of the Outstanding Members received a special trophy donated by FNB Bank of Fontanelle/Greenfield/Massena/Anita/Correctionville.
