LENOX – AMVC Management Services celebrated National Pork Month by educating fourth-grade students at East Union Elementary School and first-grade students at Lenox Elementary about pig farming.
This past week, Alicia Humphrey, AMVC public relations coordinator, brought two piglets into each classroom. Humphrey discussed a range of topics with the students including animal housing, care and nutrition. The students learned about the life cycle of a pig and the wide variety of meat and other by-products pigs provide. The fourth graders got a closer look at a pig’s diet, as they had the opportunity to smell and feel a starter pig ration. Humphrey read “Welcome to our Farm,” a book showcasing what happens inside of hog buildings to the first graders. The piglets received a lot of attention, as everyone was eager to have a turn to pet the piglets.
“It was a rewarding afternoon. The students asked great questions and enjoyed learning about how we care for pigs. It is awesome to see local students excited about the swine industry,” Humphrey said.
The piglets came from Taurus Sow, the local AMVC sow farm, located in Lenox. AMVC enjoys giving back to the community and providing learning opportunities for students. AMVC Management Services is headquartered in Audubon and manages 117,500 sows across seven states.
