GREENFIELD — Nodaway Valley’s girls cross country team had not won a meet since 2009.
In the years since that time, the Wolverines have even been short of runners to score team points at meets.
So when it was announced that Earlham took second-place with 79 team points, priceless look of euphoria swept over the faces of Nodaway Valley’s young girls team.
Reagan Weinheimer and Sophia Broers grabbed spots four and five in the race, working hard all over the hilly terrain of Greenfield Golf and Country Club on Monday. Mallory Kuhns and Madison Van Otterloo took home 11th and 22nd, respectively, as every Wolverine girls runner was crucial in achieving the home win.
“Sophia ran her best race at Wartburg and she ran great…ran with her dad... I think she ran 200 miles (this summer) and never ran before in her life competitively before cross country,” Nodaway Valley coach Darrell Burmeister said about Broers, showing how impressed he was with his young runner.
Bedford’s Emma Lucas bested rival Elise Emmick of Southeast Warren for the top spots on the girls side.
Mount Ayr picked up a solid third-place team finish with Paige Lynch (ninth) and Makayla Jones (14) leading the Raiderette girls.
East Union picked up sixth as the Eagles work toward full health as a unit.
“Kate (Sutton) ran an amazing race,” EU coach Rich Bryson said. “Gabby’s (Valencia) usually ahead of her. Gabby got her by about five seconds at the end. Kate ran I felt, a really good race. I talked to the girls beforehand and said ‘conference is in a week, let’s step it up a bit.’”
Other area leaders were Maddie Lohmann of Diagonal in third and Cassidy Nelson of Lenox in sixth.
Nodaway Valley had the top four boys finishers in easily besting the field on the boys side.
The Wolverines had Brycen Wallace, Josh Baudler, Skyler Rawlings and Tyler Breheny at the top four spots.
“Not too many kids run 17s on this course. He (Brycen Wallace) looked really strong,” Burmeister said about his Class 1A sixth-ranked individual runner, who finished in time of 17:46.
He noted that all of the varsity runners and top JV runners were picking things up competitively, like senior Skyler Rawlings.
“It’s time for him to pick it up and it’s October and we expect him and Brycen to lead us,” Burmeister said.
For Mount Ayr’s sixth-place boys team, Isaac Timmerman and Chase Smith finished within a second of one another at 15th and 16th.
Trent Newton and Camren Solari of Southwest Valley did the same at 69th and 70th.
The Wolverines will host many of the teams at Monday’s meet once more at next Tuesday’s Pride of Iowa meet.
