Area football: Timberwolves make statement; Raiders succumb to CD passing attack

SW Valley 38, Earlham 15

CORNING — Three Southwest Valley players rushed for more than 100 yards as the Timberwolves avenged a disappointing loss in 2016 in a dominant 38-15 victory Friday night.

The Timberwolves, now 3-0 overall and 1-0 in Class A District 7, outgained the Cardinals 441-234 in total yards. Southwest Valley led 28-0 at halftime.

Quarterback Chance Cobb ran for a team-high 177 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown scamper, and completed 3 of 8 passes for 38 yards and a 15-yard scoring connection with Addison Bull.

Aaron Armstrong scored three touchdowns and 114 yards for the Timberwolves. Aiden Gaule added 112 yards on the ground.

Brett Schafroth led the Timberwolves defense with 14 total tackles and Armstrong had 10.

Southwest Valley’s ball control, amassing 403 yards on 45 carries, limited the opportunities for Earlham’s running attack behind a big line. Jason Hopp came into the game with 193 yards in two games, but was held to 50 yards on seven rushes. Junior Devin Crees led the Cardinals with 131 yards on 16 attempts.

“Fundamentals can beat size, and I thought our offensive line was firing off the ball and doing a good job against their front,” Southwest Valley coach Anthony Donahoo said. “On defense we were flying to the ball. We have guys we can rotate in, especially at cornerback, and I thought our speed made a difference on both sides of the ball.”

The Timberwolves had success despite some adversity, including the absence of Jace Petersen, at cornerback and fullback.

“Jace got a concussion in the Mount Ayr game and he’s just now in that protocol phase for a possible return against Griswold next week,” Donahoo said. “During the week Aaron Armstrong and Chance Cobb were both sick. Cobb missed two days of school. I was worried. The guys really responded on a hot night and played with a great pace.”

The Timberwolves play at Griswold Friday. The Tigers got their first win, 77-14, over Riverside on Friday after suffering losses to Missouri Valley and West Monona. Heath Ogg had 158 yards and four touchdowns in the win. In all, the Tigers ran for 525 yards and held Riverside to one first down.

“This game will be a lot like playing Mount Ayr and Earlham, in that they want to come out and run the ball down your throat,” Donahoo said. “We’ll need another good defensive performance.”

MOUNT AYR — A late first-half fumble negated what could have been a lead for Mount Ayr on a night where missed opportunities killed the Raiders in a 34-22 home loss to Central Decatur.

Mount Ayr would have led at the half had it scored, but headed into the locker room down 8-7.

Dawson Frost's five-yard scoot was the line Raider score. He also was 4 of 9 passing for 51 yards. Frost ran for 39 yards. Bradley Wurster caught two of his passes for 37 yards.
Zach Murphy ended up leading Mount Ayr with 148 yards rushing on 15 carries.

“We were able to move the ball but we just couldn’t finish off drives,” Mount Ayr co-coach Delwyn Showalter said. “That was the big thing.... Several times where we had a good drive doing and we would stall out…We have to clean up our penalties.”

Cardinals quarterback Carter Boothe carved up the Raider defense in the second half with his 331 passing yards on 16 of 25 attempts, five touchdowns and 91 yards rushing.

He’s a nice player, obviously a great passer and a slippery runner,” Showalter said. “Really hard to draw a beat on him and get a good solid hit. We thought we had him pinned in and he slipped through.”

Cole Pedersen and Gunner Graham both recorded two touchdown catches.

“We really didn’t do a bad job of covering them and I know it sounds ridiculous probably. Our pass coverage was decent, the thing was, we just could not get pressure on him (Boothe),” Showalter said.

The Raiders already had issues with some lack of depth in the secondary before Hunter Haveman went out of the game while banged up. The size advantage the Cardinals had at wide receiver helped the Central Decatur offense immensely.

Marcus Daughton, a staple of the Raider secondary, did not play as a result of an injury sustained in last week’s loss to Southwest Valley.

Mount Ayr (1-2, 0-1) heads up to Woodward Academy for a game next Friday.

“We go up there. Long road trip and the team has a lot of athletes,” Showalter said. “They do some nice things. We’ve got to take carer lot ourselves, we’ve got to clean the penalties up and we’ve got to take care of the football.”
