Creston/O-M dominated Clarinda winning 48-0 over its home opener Friday night. But, very few drives were completed without a hitch.
The Panthers netted 452 yards of offense on their way to a big numerical win over the Cardinal. However, the Panthers had multiple drives stalled on penalties and bad snaps.
The first half saw nearly every drive hit a speed bump with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, a personal fouls or a fumble.
Creston/O-M finished with nine penalties accumulating 90 yards in reverse. Eight of those penalties came in the first half. Creston/O-M fumbled the ball three times, but recovered all of them.
Head coach Brian Morrison was less than satisfied with his team's performance.
"We definitely made too many mistakes penalty-wise to play a good team in our district and compete," said Morrison after the game. "I'm very disappointed in that."
"We had to find something to hang our hats on in the second half that's why you saw more of our varsity," said Morrison. "Our No. 1 kids are making mistakes that they should not be making week two."
It was unsure during the week how much time Kylan Smallwood would see on the field after being banged up following Boone. The junior quarterback not only started, but lead the way offensively with four total touchdowns.
Smallwood finished the game completing 5 of 11 passes for 58 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried the rock 11 times for 89 yards and another two scores.
Mitchel Swank carried the ball 23 times for 182 yards and added a touchdown on a 58-yard scamper in the first series of the game.
Creston/O-M (1-1) will travel to take on Harlan (1-1) next Friday.
East Union 38, East Mills 26
AFTON — After stopping a two-point play that would have tied the game, East Union outscored East Mills 10-0 over the final eight minutes in a 38-26 victory Friday night.
Trevor Glockel scored a 1-yard touchdown with 8:54 left for East Mills, but was stopped short by a swarming Eagle defense on his two-point conversion carry, preserving the Eagles' 28-26 lead.
Colten Abell's punt to the corner that went out of bounds at East Mills' 2-yard line pinned the Wolverines deep at the 3:15 mark, and a lateral pass that bounced out of bounds in the end zone resulted in a safety for a 30-26 margin.
East Union took the ensuing kick and needed only 24 yards to strike with the clinching touchdown. Dillon Weis gathered in a pass from Matt McGuire along the right sideline in the end zone for a 12-yard score. Wittstock ran in the two-pointer for the final 38-26 margin.
For the game, Wittstock carried 20 times for 75 yards and a touchdown. He also had a 28-yard TD reception. Kole Seales and Gavin Kline each had rushing touchdowns while rushing for 20 yards.
McGuire completed 6-of-13 passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Weis finished with a pair of catches for 40 yards and Levi Parrott had a 33-yard reception.
For the defense, Brady Reese had nine tackles. Finishes with eight each were Tate Kerrigan, Brady Martinez and Wittstock. Martinez also batted down two passes.
Chris Darnold had 64 yards rushing with one touchdown for East Mills, now 0-2. He also had five catches for 53 yards and had a team-high nine tackles. Glockel rushed for 47 yard. Quarterback Michael Schafer was 13-of-25 passing for 113 yards.

Southwest Valley 14, Mount Ayr 6
MOUNT AYR – Southwest Valley spoiled Mount Ayr's first game on its new turf field by defeating the Raiders 14-6 in a physical battle.
Southwest Valley struck first, as Chance Cobb connected with Grant Maurer for a 30-yard touchdown on third and 11, capping an eight-play drive and giving the Timberwolves a 7-0 lead with :02.6 left in the first quarter.
Mount Ayr finally got on the board late in the second quarter, when Myles Greene dropped a ball in over the Southwest Valley defense to Marcus Daughton for a 27-yard touchdown. Southwest Valley blocked the PAT to maintain a 7-6 lead.
Facing third and goal from the Mount Ayr 5 yardline with 5:33 to go in the game, Cobb and Maurer connected for another touchdown to give Southwest Valley a 14-16 lead.
Logan Calkins' interception of Greene on the ensuing drive looked to be the final blow for Mount Ayr, but the Raiders had one final possession with just over 1:00 to go. But Chance TePoel sacked Dawson Frost on fourth down, allowing Southwest Valley to run out the clock.
Southwest Valley improved to 2-0 for the season and hosts Earlham next Friday in the Class A District 7 opener. Mount Ayr dropped to 1-1 and hosts Central Decatur in the Class 1A District 5 opener next Friday.
Interstate 35 55, Nodaway Valley 13
TRURO — Nodaway Valley dressed just 14 players and was missing two critical members of its team in a 55-13 loss loss Friday at Interstate 35.
The Roadrunners scored the first 34 points of the game, running all over the think Wolverines, while led by a steady push from their offensive line and the quick feet of Mason Cassady.
Cassady ran for 234 first-half rushing yards as the Roadrunners totaled 330 offensive yards on their way to a 48-6 halftime lead.
Brady Hilpipre’s 78-yard catch-and-run with 3:32 left to go in the first half stopped that, but Cassady scored again on a 59-yard run.
Hilpipre scored his second touchdown with a 2-yard plunge in the fourth quarter.
“It’s tough, but the kids have been really resilient and really positive about it. They understand what’s going on,” Nodaway Valley coach Steve Shantz said." It was either forfeit, which these kids and I didn’t want to do … We wanted to do some good things, come up here, give them the opportunity to get some good reps. We did some good things for what we had and everybody got some playing time."
The Wolverines play powerhouse St. Albert next week.
