A piece of Creston’s history was headed to the restored Depot. A large bas-relief (sculpture) was removed from the home of Fred Haag. The piece commemorated Lewis and Clark’s expedition and had been presented by the 1922 eighth-grade class to the former Franklin School, in the 400 block of South Elm Street. Haag, a member of the class, purchased the bas-relief in 1970 when the school was demolished. Lucille Vogel was to restore the artwork to be displayed in the hallway on the second floor of the Depot.
Creston Community School District selected bus driver Darwin West in 1996 and high school counselor Mary Lou Judd as winners of “I Make a Difference Award.” A letter from Ty and Peggy Rogers about their appreciation of West’s concern during the extended absence of their first-grade daughter, Bailey, triggered the beginning of this new award. West had called and expressed his concern and Peggy was touched by his kindness. Judd was selected for spending extra time over two years assisting 1997 graduate Clint Vicker even though he wasn’t one of her assigned students. Clint’s mother, Anne, had nominated Judd after she had assisted her son through a difficult period and kept him on track to graduate.
