Raiderettes rise to the top

Wolverine girls exceed expectations

AFTON — Thanks to a combination of depth that fueled strong relays, blazing fast sprints and a consistent bunch of field athletes, the Mount Ayr girls track and field team roared to a POI title Tuesday in Afton.

Mount Ayr's 148 team points helped it to double up all of the competition.

“We scored in 18 of the 19 events, so it was just a total team effort from top to bottom," Mount Ayr coach Deb Larsen said.

"Dare to prepare" has been the Raiderettes' motto all season long, and the squad hardly missed a beat Tuesday.

“I think they just come mentally on and they just go for it whatever race it is," Larsen said.

Nodaway Valley performed about as well as it has all year, taking home second place as a team with 73.

East Union came in eighth with 56 points, Southwest Valley was 11th with 36 points and Lenox came in 12th by scoring five.

Plenty of people love to use the refrain that goes something to the extent of "the best perform on the brightest stages."

At Mount Ayr's biggest meet of the year thus far, the the Raiderettes had numerous girls show stronger than they had all season.

Bailey Anderson stuck out after earning gold in each of her events Tuesday, those being the 100 meter dash, the 200, the 400 and in anchoring the 4x400, which posted its season best by more than two seconds with a 4:24.14.

Others, like Alyssa Johnson and Keirston Klommhaus, also thrived.

Johnson beat her sister Ashton's 100 meter hurdles record, previously 16.36, by running officially in 15.87 seconds, though Tuesday's meet was hand-timed.

Johnson and Anderson both overcame the challenge of Charissa Mogler of Bedford several times. Mogler has been a frequent thorn in the side of the Raiderette sprinters.

Klommhaus went for second in the 200 in 28.00, and was the anchor of the winning 4x100, and 4x200 teams and the second-place sprint medley unit.

“They dug deep and they found something," Larsen said of the three sprinters.

Other Raiderettes like Sara Winemiller and Hannah Jackson went for first and second respectively in the shot put, with Jackson easily exceeding a personal best with a throw of 34 feet, 3 inches.

Mount Ayr picked up 26 team points in field events as the squad was well on its way to dominance.

Samantha Stewart picked up third in the 400 hurdles, the 4x800 relay team earned third, the sprint medley team took second and MacKenzie Shields picked up third in the high jump.

The Wolverines' second-place finish came after emerging toward the top of a muddied up and competitive field of teams.

“Happy with second place and I think the girls are happy," Nodaway Valley coach Brett Welsch said.

Rachel Scheel was just one Wolverine to grit through Tuesday's meet after dealing with a chest cold recently.

Scheel took second in the open 400, third in the open 200, was the anchor on the second-place 4x400, and the anchor on the winning sprint medley team that won in a time of 1:59.91.

“She still ran really well," Welsch said.

Nodaway Valley was runner-up or top five even in plenty of events, but still came out on top in the sprint medley.

East Union found success in a number of ways, earning three POI titles and posting season-bests in several events.

The Eagles' shuttle hurdle relay team won with a season's-best time of 1:11.45 to win the title a half of a second quicker than Central Decatur.

The Eagles' distance medley won a title with a time of 4:30.20, another best, while Emma Harper won the 800 title in a personal best time of 2:25.21.

"Good meet. After Mount Ayr, there’s a lot of balance in our conference," East Union coach Rich Bryson said. "It’s any given night how well do you run. We ran extremely well.”

Southwest Valley coach Jason Hults was not entirely satisfied with his team's performance across the board, but was encouraged by the individual performances of several girls.

The one that most vividly came to mind for him was Delaney Dalton's fourth-place shot put throw of 32-3.

The young Timberwolves will be looking to made great strides as the season comes to its close.

“Some of the other times I was little disappointed in, but we’ve got three more meets," Hults said. "We’ll see what we can do and get those ready for districts next week.”

Lenox was 12th in the field. The Tigers' best performance came from Jacy Stoaks and her fifth-place discus throw of 92-6, easily a new best for her.

Raider boys secure semi-satisfying second

While the girls were busy running away with the conference title, the Raider boys found themselves matched up with an extremely deep Pleasantville squad.

Pleasantville rode its depth to a win with 143 team points to Mount Ayr's second-place 115 points.

Nodaway Valley came in third with 102, Southwest Valley was fifth with 67, Lenox came in seventh by scoring 37, and East Union was hurting from the absence namely of Casey Walter, who injured his ankle early on in the long jump. The Eagles scored 14 points and came in 12th.

Mount Ayr coach Brad Elliott has witnessed his young team excel in relays namely, but has made a name for itself in other ways this season. He was excited to see schools like Pleasantvile and Nodaway Valley bring their A-game to be things more intense.

“We had some young kids really step up and better their times and run some personal bests," Elliott said. "Very productive night. Very excited for things to come.”

Mount Ayr's best relay performances came in a 4x400 victory to close the night in 3:33.75, a victory in the sprint medley, a second-place finish in the distance medley, second in the 4x800.

Cal and Marcus Daughton helped earn medals in team points in several events, with Marcus also taking third in the 110 hurdles, and Cal grabbing a tie for second, with Southwest Valley's Aaron Armstrong, in the 100 meter dash, and a third in the 200.

Th Hunters, of the Haveman and Arends persuasion, continued to be integral to the team's sprint relay success.

Nodaway Valley's third-place finishes came with several strong distance finishes and a win from Jared Corder, despite nearly losing his 800 race when he let up at the end.

Shane Breheny (10:05.73) and Brycen Wallace (10:07.16) posted personal bests in the 3,200 to finish first and second respectively. Breheny bested himself once more with a win in the 1,600 in a time of 4:42.95.

Nodaway Valley grabbed wins in the 4x800 and the distance relay and a third-place medal in the 4x400.

Southwest Valley's fifth-place team performance was highlighted by victories in stacked 4x100 and 4x200 lineups. The times of 46.40 and 1:35.61 were both season bests. Grant Maurer, Aaron Armstrong, Wyatt McAlpin and Chance Cobb were on each of those two winners.

Armstrong was an individual leader for the Timberwolves as he placed second in the 100 dash and fourth in the long jump.

Christian McCuen was second to Central Decatur's Cauy Spidle in the high jump with his leap of 5-6.

Maurer's 57.37 in the 400 hurdles was also a best for the junior.

"We were looking to finish in the top half as a team and we were able to do that," Southwest Valley coach Allen Naugle said. "We were looking to win the 4x100 and the 4x200 and the guys went out and ran great races to win both. We have two more meets to try to tweak a few hand-offs and continue to improve before districts."

Lenox was led by Jeremy Daye and two top-five individual times for Dawson Tullberg.

“Our conference is really really competitive," Lenox coach Matt Malausky said. "I wasn’t disappointed at all with our team finishes.”

East Union's most notable performances came from its third-place distance medley group.

Races were hand-timed. All official times should be considered with an additional 0.24 seconds added.
