4-H’ers tour Creston Vet Clinic

Nearly 30 Union County 4-H’ers and Clover Kids took advantage of their no-school day and participated in April’s 4-H SPIN event with the Creston Vet Clinic and Dr. Tim Nelson. The SPIN (SPecial INterest) program began in September and will last through May.

“The SPIN program is meant to spark an interest in something new for the 4-H’er,” said Haley Jones, Union County Youth and Outreach Coordinator. “Each month a different event, workshop or tour is planned for the 4-H’ers.”

Nelson gave the youth a tour of the clinic where they learned about different tools and equipment and gained some insight about the life of a vet.

“It is important to give youth exposure to what we as vets do on a daily basis to keep both their pets and production animals healthy,” Nelson said. “Some of these kids will grow up to work in the animal industry and help in making those decisions in preventive medicine, and if I can help make up a kid’s mind on what they want to be when they grow up, then that’s the cherry on top.”

4-H’ers will have one more SPIN event to finish out the program for the year. Yoga, Pilates and healthy living with the YMCA are scheduled for May’s event. The Insect Zoo from Iowa State University, the southwest Iowa Shutterbugs, Upper Crust Bakery, KSIB, draft horses with Dannie Stephens and an etiquette dinner with Lois Houghtaling were the previous months SPIN events.
