Tough conditions challenge EU, Lenox boys track and field

LENOX — Conditions were nearly ideal when Lenox boys track and field coach Matt Malausky and his crew set up for Monday’s Lenox Invitational.

By the time the meet started, grey skies, cold temperatures and blustery north winds enveloped the track.

Times were not what Malausky and his staff hoped for, but the Tigers still turned in a number of good performances at their home meet.

Lenox picked up wins from from Dawson Tullberg in the 110 hurdles, the 4x200 meter relay team of Jeremy Daye, Jared Hensley, Derek Venteicher and Colton Hogan, along with the sprint medley relay quartet of Daye, Sam Donaldson, Colton Gordon and Bret Myers.

“There was just not a lot of good times with the weather,” Malausky said. “It was sunny when we set up for the whole meet and then boom, it got cold. It was not fun for the guys or coaches at all.”

Lenox took second as a team with 106 points. Griswold was the champion with 177 points. East Union was fourth with 75 points.

Still early in the season, the Tiger coaches experimented with various athletes in different races.

“We’re still trying to see who fits where, see where we can try to score for some of our guys, get our best chances to state in different events.”

The addition of the sprint medley relay, and the change in the order that came because of it, suits the Tigers well.

“I like it way better,” Malausky said. “I wish we would’ve had it last year.”

East Union was led by Gabe Nixon’s win in the 400 meter dash.

The 4x400 relay quartet of Nixon, Joshua Hardy, Casey Walter and Mason Gossman closed the evening with a win.

“It was nice to get that one,” said East Union coach James Hardy. “The 4x4 is coming along, Gabe in the open four, Nixon and Casey both ran well.”

Conditions tested the Eagle runners as well.

“The times aren’t going to be breaking in there, but we’re running hard and competing,” Hardy said.

The new format has been an adjustment for East Union.

“It makes things a little different,” Hardy said. “We’re figuring out slowly, but surely.”
