Family fun
Southern Prairie YMCA offers Family Fun Night on the third Friday of every month. On Friday, Nov. 18 the Y is getting out the bubble balls for bubble ball bounce, battle and bowl.
The evening starts with “Cosmic Swim” in the pool from 6-7:30 p.m. where the underwater lights are turned on and the overhead lights are off for a fun swimming environment.
At 7:30 p.m. the bubble balls come out for lots of fun. The Y will have soccer games to battle, individuals can be the “ball” to bowl or people can just bounce, all for loads of fun.
Family Fun Night is free for Southern Prairie YMCA members and day pass rates for non-members.
On Monday, Nov. 21 Southern Prairie YMCA invites the public to its Vision 2020 Open House. The evening will highlight the positive ways the Y is impacting the community and exciting plans for the future. The open house is 6:30-8 p.m. with a presentation at 7 p.m.
Light refreshments will be served. This evening kicks off the Y’s annual giving campaign. As individuals think about year-end giving, the Y staff encourages individuals and businesses to consider a meaningful gift to the Southern Prairie YMCA.
The Y’s Vision 2020 event ties in with the worldwide “Giving Tuesday” on Tuesday, Nov. 29. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, “Giving Tuesday” kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. Since its inaugural year in 2012, “Giving Tuesday” has become a movement that celebrates and supports giving and philanthropy.
After school
The Southern Prairie YMCA offers an after school program at the Y. The program is for children in Jr Kindergarten through fifth grade. Children are picked up at school by the Southern Iowa Trolley and taken to the Y. The program features gym time, swimming and STEM activities. The Y received a $2,500 grant this fall to purchase STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) related items to supplement the Y’s after school programming.
The after school program starts after the school day and goes until 6 p.m. A program is also available during the Creston Schools No School days. Free youth memberships are included for weekly afterschool program participants. Parent packets and registration forms are available on the YMCA website or at the Y. Call Youth Programs Coordinator Jennifer Queener at 782-9622 with any questions.
Swim lessons
The YMCA has added two additional group swim lesson sessions in November and December. The beginner swim lessons are for children age 4 to 6 years old. Lessons are 2:15 p.m. throughout the week and start Nov. 28 and Dec. 13. Lessons are limited to six children each session. Call the Aquatics Coordinator Kristie Terlizzi at 782-9622 for more information.
