Larry Orville Geary, 75, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2016, at his daughter’s home in West Des Moines.
Celebration of life will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., in Afton. The Rev. Jim Morris will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, east of Afton. Military honors will be provided by Theodore J. Martens VFW Post No. 1797 of Creston and Afton. Open visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home in Afton. Memorials may be directed to American Legion in Afton. Larry, son of Jessie Lee and Mabel Helen (Scott) Geary, was born June 16, 1941, in Carbon. He graduated from Creston High School in 1960.
On Sept. 11, 1965, Larry married Karen Sue (Klos) Geary in Afton. He served his country with the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado, until his honorable discharge in 1968.
He worked at various jobs throughout his life. His jobs included being a cook and baker for Bernings Cafe in Shenandoah and Creston. He worked for Mayflower Trucking Company traveling around the Midwest and Jimmy Dean as a sanitation supervisor, which turned into his career until his retirement at the age of 65.
Larry is survived by his son Scott (fiancée Kristen) Geary of Creston; daughter Content Geary (husband Derek Howard) of West Des Moines; grandson Jacob Geary of Creston; brothers, Leroy (Sue) Geary of Sautee, Georgia, Rex (Janice) Geary of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Roger Geary of Seattle, Washington; sister Ruby Turner of Creston; family friend Judy Wilson of Afton; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; wife Karen in 1997; brother Virgil Geary; sister Beverly Stalford and brother-in-law Cleve Turner.
