Nodaway Valley boys cross country, East Union girls add to trophy case

MOUNT AYR — The Nodaway Valley boys cross country team dominated once again Thursday.

All was right in the local cross country world as the Class 1A top-ranked Wolverines won with a score of 17 points.

Nodaway Valley’s Shane Breheny was the boys individual champion with a time of 17 minutes five seconds at the Ron Landphair Invitational at the Mount Ayr Golf and Country Club Thursday.

The Wolverines’ Brayten Funke was a semi-close second in 17:12. Brycen Wallace took third with a time of 17:19.

Wallace and Funke ran a healthy distance behind Breheny for much of the race, but Breheny controlled it from the opening gun. Tyler

Breheny, Skyler Rawlings, Matthew Dickinson and Dallas Kreager took fifth, sixth, seventh and 13th respectively for the Wolverines.

Mount Ayr’s top three boys runners, Isaac Timmerman, Chase Smith and Will Hunt, ran much of the course together and finished in-order in the 17, 18 and 19 spots to earn fourth place in their home meet.

Nodaway Valley’s Reagan Weinheimer dominated the girls race, winning in a time of 19:58 and defeated the next closest runner by 37 seconds.

Diagonal’s Maddie Lohmann finished in sixth place with a time of 21:41.

East Union received top ten finishes from Jena Proffitt, who picked up seventh place in 21:58, and Emma Harper, who finished 10th with a time of 22:26.

It helped the squad to pick up a win on the heels of a Pride of Iowa Conference championship won Tuesday. The East Union girls won the event with 37 points.

The Raiderette girls squad one-upped the boys with a third-place finish as Rachel Gregg led squad with a 19th place finish. Each of the seven Mount Ayr girls runners finished among the top half of the varsity field.

The Southwest Valley girls, who finished fourth, had an 11th place finish by Maslyn Hummel and a 14th place mark by Elizabeth Fuller. Hummel’s time was 22:41 and Fuller’s mark was 22:53.
