Edna “Shirley” Sweeney, 91, of Mount Ayr died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2016, at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe St., in Mount Ayr. The Rev. Bill Armstrong will officiate the service. Graveside service and burial will be held 5 p.m. Sunday in New Altoona Cemetery, intersection of NE 80th St. and NE 50th Ave., in Altoona. Open visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with family present from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Memorials are to First Christian Church in Mount Ayr. Edna Shirley Sweeney, daughter of Charles William and Blanche Lucille (Vangorp) Lehmkuhl, was born Nov. 22, 1924, in Percy, Iowa. Shirley graduated from Mitchellville High School in 1942.

On June 12, 1948, she married Hal Sweeney at her parent’s farm home in rural Mitchellville. Shirley and Hal lived their first years of married life on the Sweeney family farm in rural Runnells. In 1957, they bought and moved to a farm near Truro where they raised their family. In 1999, they retired and built a home in Mount Ayr.

Shirley was a member of Altoona Christian Church and attended Mount Ayr First Christian Church the past 17 years.

Shirley is survived by her children, Becky Sweeney of Winterset, Brad (Quendy) Sweeney of Truro and Julie (Joe) Routh of Mount Ayr; grandchildren, Gretchen (Mike) Heffernan, Shannon Sweeney, Kelli Sweeney, Katie (Logan) Porter, Tricia (Jeff) Uitermarkt and Matt (Katie) Routh; great-grandchildren, Eddie and Ayla Heffernan, Devon and Blake Beener, Raylan Hal Porter, Decker, Grady and Ruby Uitermarkt, and Claire, Nash and Libby Routh; brother Bill Lehmkuhl; sister-in-law Marilyn Sweeney; host of relatives and friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband Hal Sweeney; parents-in-law, Earl and Mildred Sweeney; sisters-in-law, Priscilla Lehmkuhl, Dorothy Martin, Jean Kirschner, Libby Carroll, Emma Sweeney, Jewel Sweeney and Betty Sweeney and brothers-in-law, Herb Sweeney, Dan Sweeney, Dave Sweeney, Jim Sweeney, Al Martin, Hans Kirschner and Kenneth Carroll.
