Five minutes with Shelly Newcomb, CCSD crossing guard

AGE: 41

HOMETOWN: Prescott

FAMILY: Husband, Chris; daughters Christina and Estella

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A CROSSING GUARD FOR CRESTON COMMUNITY SCHOOLS? One year

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A CROSSING GUARD? My mom died almost two years ago, and I needed to get out of the house because I was her caregiver.

BEST PART OF YOUR JOB: Waving hello and goodbye to everybody and getting the kids across the street safely. I also enjoy bringing the kids candy on Valentine's Day, Christmas and Easter.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU WORK? Twice a day Monday through Friday for 1.5 hours each time

HOW DO YOU STAY WARM IN THE WINTER? I wear my insulated (neon) jacket they provide, and when it's really cold, I go sit in my truck to warm up when nobody's crossing.

MOST DIFFICULT PART OF YOUR JOB: Right now, being on crutches. I pulled my Achilles tendon.

HAVE YOU HAD ANY ISSUES WITH DISTRACTED DRIVERS? Before the sun started coming up sooner and it was darker in the morning, I was almost hit twice by drivers not paying attention.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE MOVIE: "Purple Rain"

HOBBIES: Making hook-latch rugs and spending time with friends and family

ARE YOU AS EXCITED AS THE KIDS ARE FOR SUMMER BREAK? Oh, yes. I'm not an early morning person.
