Creston’s ‘50s-themed prom slated Saturday

Creston High School’s prom, “Drive-in to the ‘50s,” is Saturday.

It is the only prom this weekend in the Creston News Advertiser coverage area. Virginia Harlan, junior class co-sponsor, said this year’s festivities are about two weeks ahead of last year.

“In the past, there have been extra-curricular activities scheduled the same day as prom, and that has created some stress for families who had to rush around,” Harlan said. “This is a date that worked better.”

Harlan said the ‘50s-themed prom features dinner served in “little red baskets” with milkshakes. She said records have been donated by the community and are being used by the junior class for decorating the school’s gymnasium.

Harlan said the public is welcome to attend prom pictures from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. at Maple Street Memories in Creston as well as the red carpet entrance at about 6 p.m. Saturday at the high school. Viewers will need to park off campus. Limited bleacher seating will be available during the red carpet entrance. Organizers strongly recommend the public bring their own lawn chairs.

Restrooms will be available for public use at the football field.

Harlan said the grand march inside the school’s gymnasium will begin around 7:30 p.m. for those that have wristbands. Meanwhile, Crestubilee (after-prom) will begin around midnight.

The News Advertiser will have photos from Creston prom in Monday’s newspaper and a 16-page Crestubilee special section will be inserted in the April 15 newspaper.

Other proms being held in the area over the next month include: Murray (April 15), Southwest Valley (April 16), Nodaway Valley (April 23), East Union (April 23), Orient-Macksburg (April 23), Clarke (April 23), Lenox (April 23), Mount Ayr (April 23) and Diagonal (May 6).
