CORNING — Southwest Valley’s swarming defense was too much for the East Union girls in a 68-30 victory by the Timberwolves Tuesday night.
Southwest Valley had 19 steals for the game, including six by Kaitlyn Schad and four by Morgan Shuey. Shuey and Miah Hummel each had 12 points in the first half as as Southwest Valley built a 41-16 lead.
Shuey made three 3-pointers and shot 6-of-7 at the line in finishing with a game-high 23 points. Hummel ended with 16 points and Schad totaled 11 points. Danica Sunderman finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Shuey dished out five assists.
“We came out and played very good defense and created a lot of turnovers throughout the game,” Southwest Valley coach Allen Naugle said. “We were able to get out in transition and get some easy baskets.”
Southwest Valley improved to 4-6 overall and 4-4 in the Pride of Iowa Conference heading into Friday’s game at Pleasantville.
Sidney McFee scored eight points for East Union, which fell to 0-11 and 0-8. Olivia Eckels had seven points and Callie Gossman netted six points. The Eagles host Murray Thursday and travel to Southeast Warren Friday.
Murray 42, Seymour 34
MURRAY — Balanced scoring led Murray to a 42-34 victory over Seymour Tuesday night.
Despite limited playing time due to foul trouble, Madison Gonseth had nine points and nine rebounds for the Lady Mustangs, now 9-1 overall and 8-0 in the Bluegrass Conference. Shelby Myers and Kayla Wookey each had eight points with Myers also collecting six rebounds. Bre Klein and McKenzie McIntosh each had four assists.
Riley Jewitt scored 12 points for Seymour, now 7-5 and 5-3. Murray plays at East Union at 6:15 p.m. Thursday.
