Tuesday’s Hawkeye 10 Conference double dual had the makings of a heavyweight prize fight, with second-ranked Creston/O-M and 10th-ranked Glenwood headlining the card.
The main event lost some of its luster with Glenwood having two wrestlers out of the lineup, but for Creston/O-M head coach Darrell Frain, a win is a win.
Glenwood opened the night with a 62-13 rout of Denison-Schleswig, before Creston/O-M shut out the Monarchs 73-0. Creston/O-M then rolled to a 48-19 victory over Glenwood, giving the Panthers their 27th straight Hawkeye 10 Conference dual win.
“Coming in, I thought it’d go down to the wire,” Frain said. “Then when we had weigh-ins, I realized they had a few kids out of the lineup. And one or two kids out of a lineup can make a score in wrestling look a lot different than what the competition was really like. Because they’re pretty darn good. Then again, you go back, you win and that’s all you care about.”
The dual was never closely contested. Third-ranked Kadon Hulett rolled to a 13-1 major decision over Kyle Griffin to start the dual at 220 pounds, and then heavyweight Cody Tanner lost a 3-1 decision in sudden victory to Caleb Sanders, making the score 4-3.
“I thought we were the underdog,” Frain said about Tanner’s match. “Cody Tanner took it to the wire, losing in overtime. That was a great battle for him.”
Sophomore Cade Vicker notched his second pin of the night at 106 pounds against Michael Radford, with both of his pins coming in less than a minute.
That started a string of points that gave the Panthers a nearly insurmountable lead at 25-3. Jacob Goodson followed with a 6-2 decision at 113 pounds and Glenwood forfeited at both 120 and 126 pounds, with the Ram wrestlers out of the lineup.
Fifth-ranked 126-pounder Trevor Anderson wrestled up at 132 pounds and won by fall over Trevor Marlin, but Creston/O-M put the dual away with second-ranked Wyatt Thompson’s major decision at 138 and Mitchel Swank’s pin at 145.
Joey Huntington added a 19-7 major decision at 152 pounds. Glenwood picked up wins at 160 and 170 pounds from top-ranked Matt Malcom (160) and second-ranked Anthony Sherry (170).
Creston/O-M top-ranked 170-pounder Chase Shiltz made his season debut at 182 pounds, coming out to a standing ovation from Panther fans. Shiltz pushed the pace early and won by fall in 1:24.
“Nobody really even knew he was wrestling tonight,” Frain said. “Until about 10 o’clock this morning, he wasn’t. I was fully anticipating wrestling Jackson (Mikkelsen) and he got sick last night. I just figured we might as well pull the trigger and let him wrestle tonight. He looked really good.”
Seth Maitlen put the finishing touches on the dual victory, with a 6-5 decision over Zach Haggstrom in a battle of ranked wrestlers.
Maitlen, ranked second at 195 pounds, held on in a scramble situation in the final seconds to fend off sixth-ranked Haggstrom.
“Maitlen’s match was probably the biggest tossup coming in,” Frain said. “That’s a big win for him. We’ve wrestled him before. Seth’s won a lot of big ones for us, so I’m not surprised. The closer it gets at the end, I always feel confident he’s going to pull through. It was darn close at the buzzer there. It was a good win.”
The Panthers scored bonus points in nine of the 10 contested weights against Denison-Schleswig, with pins from Tanner, Vicker, Marlin, Swank and Huntington.
Thompson was recognized for having earned his 100th career victory, which came at the Dallas Center-Grimes tournament.
The Panther win gives the team a leg up in the race for the Hawkeye 10 Conference dual crown, but perhaps even more importantly, it could have a bearing on where the two teams get sent for regional duals.
“It’s a big deal, because regional duals come out, a lot will happen based on how we’re ranked,” Frain said. “In my opinion, they (Glenwood) should go one way and we should go the other way, but that may not happen. We may have to wrestle to go to state duals. It’s a big dual just to set the tone for the end of the year.”
Creston/O-M travels to Kansas City, Mo., this weekend to compete in the Kansas City Stampede on Friday and Saturday.
