George Roland ‘Doc’ Pennebaker, 90, left us Oct. 14, 2015, with several family members by his side at Clearview Homes in Mount Ayr.

Celebration of life services will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25, in Creston. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Creston. The Rev. Jim Morris will officiate. Family will be receiving friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday with a Masonic Service beginning at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Shriners or Theodore J. Doc was born on June 7, 1925, in Lenox to Dr. Evert and Bessie (Brand) Pennebaker. He graduated from Lenox High School in 1942 and attended college at Maryville, Missouri before heading to the Coast Guard for action at the Aleutian Islands during World War II. After the war, he followed in his father’s footsteps by attending Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport. He set up his practice in Creston and his wife, Dorothy, also graduated from Palmer and joined him in his practice of 35 years.

After Dorothy’s death, Doc retired from chiropractic. He married Mary Lou Hymbaugh and for a number of years, the couple lived in Creston and enjoyed their winters in Texas. For the past three years, the couple lived in Mount Ayr. Doc was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Kiwanis, Masons and Shriners, all in Creston. He was a life member and commander of the Theodore J. Martens VFW Post No. 1797 of Creston.

Doc is survived by his wife Mary Lou of Mount Ayr; two daughters, Glennda Adair from Laguna Woods, California and Gayla (husband Darren) Buckman from Plano, Texas; daughter-in-law Laurel Pennebaker of Chandler, Arizona; three step-sons, Jim (wife Debbie) Hymbaugh of Creston, Doug (wife Sherri) Hymbaugh of Mount Ayr and Ray (wife Christine) Hymbaugh of Castalia, North Carolina; five step-daughters, Terry (husband Ron) Burton of Douglas, Wyoming, Nancy Fox of Cedar Rapids, Julie Lowman (friend Bob Erickson) of Boone, Penny Hymbaugh of Mount Ayr and Lynda (husband Mark) Triggs of Mount Ayr; sister Dorthy Basler of Lenox; 25 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and other beloved extended family.

Doc was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Dorothy; son Dr. Gary Pennebaker; brother-in-law Robert Basler and step-son-in-law Kent Lowman.
