Mount Ayr 41, Clarinda Acad. 0
CLARINDA — Mount Ayr wasted little time jumping all over Clarinda Academy here Friday, picking up its first win of the season in the Class A District 8 opener.
Cal Daughton took the first play from scrimmage 54 yards for a touchdown, kickstarting the Raiders to a 41-0 victory.
“We just had a tremendous start and we never really slowed up at all,” Mount Ayr co-coach Delwyn Showalter said. “Once we got things going, the points came in bunches. I thought we did a good job of, we played hard no matter who we had in the ballgame. We were executing well and making some good things happen.”
The Raiders totaled 342 yards of offense and scored two defensive touchdowns, while holding Clarinda Academy to just 71 total yards. Mount Ayr also blocked two punts in the game.
Senior Kyle Dolecheck scored four touchdowns, three different ways. He took an 18-yard pass from Jacob Taylor for a touchdown and then just 2 minutes later, returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown.
Just 2 minutes after that, Dolecheck ran 51 yards for a touchdown. He later added a 5-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter, giving Mount Ayr the final 41-0 margin.
“He had a great night,” Showalter said. “Did a little bit of everything for us and was able to shake loose on some long runs. He had some good blocking. His interception return, we picked up a couple of great blocks. Zach Murphy threw the one that made sure he was going to get into the end zone. Kyle is a special athlete, no doubt about that.”
John Young scored Mount Ayr’s other touchdown, when he forced a sweep play back inside and then scooped up a fumble and ran it back 63 yards for a touchdown, giving Mount Ayr a 34-0 lead with 2:53 left in the first quarter.
Mount Ayr improved to 1-2 for the season and 1-0 in district play. Clarinda Academy falls to 0-3 and 0-1.
The Raiders travel to Martensdale-St. Marys on Friday.

PANORA — Southwest Valley’s march through the Class 1A top 10 didn’t start out well Friday in a 35-0 loss to seventh-ranked Panorama.
The Timberwolves (1-2 overall, 0-1 Class 1A District 8) host No. 9 Underwood (3-0, 1-0 District 1) this week for homecoming.
Gabe Richey ran for three touchdowns, Aaron Klinge passed to Cameron Allen for another and Trent Sloss had a short-yardage TD run as the Panthers moved to its 35-0 advantage by halftime. The scoreless second half was played with the mercy rule running clock.
“They were a step quicker than we were all night,” said Southwest Valley coach Bob Casagrande. “They played up tight on us and took away any chance we had to throw any of our perimeter stuff. (Chance) Cobb ran for over 80 yards, but a lot of it was scrambling to save himself. They came off the corner on the pass rush very well. It was 35-0 at half, but our kids did not quit. It was a scoreless second half.”
Freshman Alden Gaule suffered a bruised knee after five carries and sophomore Brett Schafroth played tailback. Cobb was 1-of-10 passing for 3 yards and had a team-high 89 yards rushing. Cobb also had 11 solo tackles and two assists. Schafroth finished with 10 solo tackles and two assists. Grant Maurer had nine solo stops and three assists.
Sloss led Panorama with 85 yards as the Panthers had 12 different ball carriers. Klinge was 7-of-12 passing for 107 yards. Levi Leiferman had two pass interceptions.

Lenox 70, Essex 0
ESSEX — Lenox broke away early to a 28-0 first-quarter lead on the way to blitzing Essex Friday night, 70-0.
The Tigers (3-0 overall, 1-0 Eight-Man District 8) held a 44-0 halftime lead and outscored the Trojans 26-0 as the second half was played under the mercy rule running clock.
The Tigers featured a balanced offense as quarterback Carson Cline was 8-of-9 passing for 161 yards with no interceptions, and the rushing game led by Sam Donaldson compiled 194 yards. Donaldson finished with 93 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.
Essex (1-2 and 0-1) was outgained 355-116 in total yardage and further hampered by three lost fumbles.
“The fumbles gave us a short field to work with, and we controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides,” said Lenox coach Allen Dukes. “Defensively we put pressure on their quarterback all night, forcing him to throw early, and we stopped their run game. Overall it was a good night as we played hard and got better on the defensive side. Offensively we still have to get holes opened up for our backs to really get the running game going.”
The Tigers finally play their first home game Friday at a revamped Tiger Field, celebrating homecoming against Sidney (2-1, 0-1).
