Mercy Corning recognized for safety

CORNING — CHI Health Mercy Coming was recently awarded the 2015 Silver Safety Award from the National Safety Council Greater Omaha Chapter. This honor comes as a result of the hard work and collaboration of the members of safety committee along with department staff at Mercy Coming.

The safety committee consists of members representing various clinical and nonclinical areas of the hospital. The scope of the safety committee is to provide oversight and drive the overall culture of safety at the facility. The committee addresses patient, visitor and employee safety. Members of the committee include: Sam Arentson, Anne Hansen, Jill Burgess, Kathy Morgan, Lori Hoffman, Megan King, Andy Lauritsen, Dr. Cary Ward (corporate representative), Alicia Reed, Sandy Marn, Philicia Hancock, Barb Cross, Denise Gepner, Kathy Pangburn, Kristin Fast, Sarah Stuart, Gary Pontius, Kathy Peckham, Karen Taylor, Linda Jenkins, Kim Morris, Deb Goldsmith and Lisa Wolfe.

The National Safety Council Greater Omaha Chapter annually recognizes businesses, organizations and individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to safety. Their unique mission is to promote safety and health by providing programs, resource services and education to reduce injuries, accidents and health hazards. While the primary focus is the Greater Omaha metropolitan area, their annual reach through program attendance, member distribution, material /publications distribution and media is easily four million in Iowa, Nebraska and beyond.

Companies who qualify for awards recognition have implemented an injury and illness prevention program, a safety committee, employee training and other safety initiatives designed for the unique needs of their organizations. Through their hard work, they have achieved incident rates and lost workday case rates the same as or better than their industry average. They have found through reduced injuries and illness, they have improved employee relations and improved productivity.

“We are honored to receive the award and appreciate the recognition for our staffs’ diligent attention to a culture of safety at our hospital and clinics,” Alicia Reed said. “From daily huddles, to education workshops and rounding with staff, we have implemented processes to support that culture.”

CHI Health Mercy Corning was honored to be distinguished as one of the safest hospitals in the Omaha region. Deb Goldsmith recently attended the awards program to receive recognition for staff efforts.
