A bit of lucky timing helped a Crestonian capitalize on a life-long goal while she was considering making a career shift. Angie Davis took over Quik Cash and Studio 101 Tanning and Salon May 1.
“I always wanted to have a tanning salon since I was young, but I never thought I was going to be able to pursue that,” Davis said.
Steve Wintermute helped make Davis’ dream a reality, putting in a wall to separate his Quik Pawn shop from Quik Cash and Studio 101, 101 W. Taylor St.
Davis moved to Creston when she was 5 years old with her parents. Her father owned a photography studio — Photos by Frank — and her mother worked for MATURA. Davis graduated with her nursing degree in 1995 and worked as a nurse in Corning and Omaha until 2008.
“There have been a lot of things that have slowed me down, things that I wasn’t expecting,” Davis said. “Now everything seems to be panning out for me and I am really excited about it.”
Davis has started new hours for her business to provide more convenient times for customers to tan. She will be open Monday through Thursday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“The thing that is getting me right now is the younger adults that are coming in, I see them and they look familiar to me, but I can’t remember what their name is,” Davis said. “Then they tell me and I remember them being five or six and now they are adults.”
With her nursing background, Davis wants to help make customers aware of healthy options while still getting a good tan. Studio 101 has a hydration bed that helps rejuvenate and hydrate the skin. She recently worked out a deal to start providing spray tans by Jessica England and is looking for a person to do manicures and pedicures two times a week.
“I wanted to have a little more variety so we are not just doing tanning,” Davis said.
In her spare time, Davis teaches CPR classes at Southwestern Community College. She said April was an exciting and busy time because more than 100 people in the area became certified in CPR. Local insurance agencies Tyler Insurance, American Family— Katie Turner, Carter Insurance Services, Farm Bureau — Joe Calvin, Hometown Insurance and State Farm — Ben Adamson paid for the certifications, which were held every Tuesday in April, and Southwestern Community College trainers instructed the classes, as well as the refresher course held at Creston High School.
In addition to the CPR certifications, there were 24 AEDs either directly donated or purchased with funds to be placed throughout the southwest Iowa area.
Davis has two children, Trevor and Catelinn. Trevor is a senior at Creston High School this year. Catelinn is a sophomore.
“It is fast paced,” Davis said. “I still love nursing and I love to take care of people, I am just ready for something new.”
