CLARINDA — Creston senior Jay Wolfe added another chapter to his own legend here Friday at the Cardinal Relays.
At last year’s meet, Wolfe broke a 46-year-old meet record in the 800 meters that had been held by Jerome Howe.
Friday, he broke his own record. And he did it in tennis shoes.
Prior to his race, the shoestring on his spikes snapped in half. After Creston coaches Pat Schlapia and Steve Birchard scrambled for a solution, Wolfe decided to run the race in his Asics running shoes instead of spikes.
The added weight didn’t seem to slow Wolfe down at all, as he crushed his own meet record, winning with a time of 1:56.74.
“We thought about wrapping tape around the shoestrings,” Schlapia said. “He had his Asics and wanted to know if he could run in his running shoes, no spikes. It was just as much mental, if he felt mentally OK with it. He did fine.
“When you think he did a 1:56.74, that’s amazing in itself. But when you think he did it without spikes, that’s unbelievable.”
Senior teammate Bryce Briley took third in the race, running a personal best 2:01.82. Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson’s Eldon Warner gave Wolfe a challenge coming off the last curve, and finished second with a 1:57.08.
“It was nice how all three of those guys were pushing each other around the track,” Schlapia said. “With Bryce, that 2:01.82, that ranks him probably in the top five people ever to run the 800 for Creston.”
With the Drake Relays qualification cutoff looming Thursday night, Wolfe is safely into the 800 meters field, ranking third overall in the state. Briley still has some work to do, with the current cutoff (top 16) being 2:00.59.
The Panther varsity team placed in both relays it put together. The 4x200 relay team of Alex Tamerius, Briley, Chris Foster and Wolfe took fifth in a season best time of 1:36.56.
The group of Briley, Tamerius, Nick Walsh and Wolfe ran 3:38.70 for another season best time in the 4x400 relay, placing sixth.
“Out of the four meets, we’ve tried three different combinations in this 4x400,” Schlapia said. “Alex Tamerius, this is the first time he’s ever had the chance to run that.”
Freshman Trevor Downing added a sixth-place finish for the Panthers in the shot put with his heave of 40 feet, 7 inches.
“Our throwers came through,” Schlapia said. “Trevor as a freshman came in sixth place, and that’s some heady competition. That’s an improvement, beat his season best by over two feet. Cody Tanner wasn’t too far off his season’s best in the shot, but he matched his season’s best in the discus.”
The seven-member Creston varsity team finished eighth in the eight-team field in Class 3A with 20 points.
Creston returns to action Tuesday at Chariton, with events beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Class 1A
Mount Ayr cruised to the team title in Class 1A, scoring 160 points. Griswold took second with 97 points. Lenox finished 12th with 13 points, while the Creston JV team placed 15th with 5.5 points.
Mount Ayr senior Joe Ricker won both throwing events, setting a new personal best in the shot put with his throw of 47-5.75. That ranks him 9th on the all-time Mount Ayr performance list. He won the discus with a throw of 139-0.
Kyle Dolecheck won individual titles in both the 400 meters and the 800 meters, running 53.05 and 2:10.12. In addition, he ran on the winning 4x800 and 4x400 relays.
Grant Staats picked up victories in the 110 meter high hurdles (17.14) and the 400 meter hurdles (59.13).
Mount Ayr also won the distance medley relay.
Creston’s JV squad placed in two events.
Freshman Cody Wagner tied for fifth in the high jump, clearing 5-2.
The distance medley relay team, consisting of all freshmen, ran Creston’s best time of the year in 4:15.56 for fourth place. Members of that team were Cole Higgins, Joe Eblen, Wagner and Dalten Bierle.

Southwest Valley finished sixth in Class 2A with 42 points. Shenandoah won the team competition with 120 points.
Tony Klocke won the 110 meter high hurdles for the Timberwolves, running 16.51. Scott Vanderhoof claimed the top spot in the high jump with his clearance of 5-10.
