LIBERTY CENTER — Eight area wrestlers claimed a spot in this weekend’s Class 1A District 2 Tournament by placing in the top two of their respective weight classes here Saturday at the Class 1A Section 4 Tournament.

Meanwhile, Southwest Valley advanced one wrestler to the same District 2 Tournament from its Class 1A Section 3 Tournament in Audubon.

East Union and Nodaway Valley each advanced three wrestlers to the District 2 Tournament, which will take place Saturday in Truro, beginning at noon. Mount Ayr sent only two wrestlers through to the district tournament, but finished third in the team standings.

Host Southeast Warren ran away with the team title, earning a spot in Tuesday’s Regional Dual Team Tournament. Interstate 35 earned the other spot by finishing second with 185.5 team points, 84.5 points back of Southeast Warren.

Moving on for East Union were Brogan Kinyon (170), Mike Ward (195) and Kessler Tomas (220). Nodaway Valley advanced Ben Freese (120), JD Lyman (126) and Dylan Cornelison (138). Mount Ayr seniors Grant Staats (145) and Joe Ricker (285) advanced, while Southwest Valley senior Tyler Bissell (160) advanced from the sectional in Audubon.

East Union

Kinyon, a senior, punched the first ticket to the district tournament for the Eagles. He opened the tournament by pinning Nodaway Valley’s Braxton Wallace in 3:41 and then winning a 4-3 decision over West Central Valley’s Gabe Wagner.

Kinyon’s finals match against Southeast Warren’s TJ Dierking went back and forth, with several lead changes. It was tied 8-8 in the final 20 seconds of the match, when Kinyon tried to tilt Dierking, who turned it into back points for himself, defeating Kinyon 11-8.

“He kind of put himself in a bad position at the end of the match,” head coach Steve Kinyon said. “He was right in it. He was trying to do a cheap tilt and the cheap tilts are cheap sometimes and it cheaps you.”

Ward made his way into the 195-pound finals with a pair of falls in the first minute of his quarterfinal and semifinal matches. The East Union junior lost by fall in 1:23 of his finals match against Southeast Warren’s Ty Schneider.

He then pinned Interstate 35’s Jake Hutton in 3:58 in the wrestleback match for true second place.

“Ty Schneider and he have gone back and forth all year,” Kinyon said. “Mike’s kind of been on the short end, but usually gets a pretty good start.”

At 220 pounds, Tomas lost his first match of the day in the semifinals, as he was pinned by Southeast Warren’s Tate Van Dyne in 52 seconds. Tomas wrestled all the way back with a pin of Mount Ayr’s Logan Kelley, and then coming out on top of throw in the wrestleback, pinning Interstate 35’s Garrett Thompson in 1:27.

“Kessler Tomas, he was my dark horse,” Kinyon said. “I had a feeling he could get through today. Him and Mike Ward finished with two pins. That’s how you want it done.”

Nodaway Valley

Freese won the 120-pound title for Nodaway Valley after a 10-7 semifinal win over Wayne’s Stetson Baker and a 2-0 win over Interstate 35’s Nathan Phillips in the finals.

“Ben had a kid in the finals he’s wrestled three times,” Wolverine head coach Jeff Ohnemus said. “Pretty smart kid. Knows what he’s going to do. Got a little frustrating there, not being able to score a lot of points, but he wrestled smart.”

Lyman pinned his way to the 126-pound finals, decking West Central Valley’s Tristin Winfred and East Union’s Matthew Wittstock in the first period. Interstate 35’s 10th-ranked Austin Pontier pinned Lyman in 5:11 of their championship match.

At 138 pounds, Cornelison lost his semifinal match 9-2 to Tanner Flesher of Southeast Warren, but wrestled all the way back for second place. He won a 10-8 decision over Mount Ayr’s Jonathan Vanbuskirk and then earned a 10-1 major decision of I-35’s Jacob Steinlage.

“JD Lyman at 126 just wrestled hard all day,” Ohnemus said. “Got to his stuff, had a good day. Same with Dylan Cornelison at 138. Lost first round to a tough kid, but wrestled all the way back for true second.”

Mount Ayr

State top-ranked Ricker only had three other wrestlers in his heavyweight bracket, all three of which came into the tournament with losing records.

The undefeated Raider senior picked up a pair of first-period falls to easily advance to Saturday’s district tournament as champion.

Staats picked up a pair of pins on his way to the 145-pound championship match, where he dropped an 11-3 major decision to Southeast Warren’s Gabe Henderson.

Staats pinned Interstate 35’s Austin Beener in 5:15 and Martensdale-St. Marys’ Alex Craig in 4:30.

“We kind of looked at this situation as that’s possibly what could happen to us, was have two kids go through” Mount Ayr co-head coach Kurt Wallace said. “Things were setting up, we thought if everything goes well, we could have a couple more joining them.

“The two that got through, Joe’s looking strong, real tough. And Grant did some things well today, which helped him advance on.”

Bissell advances

Southwest Valley senior Tyler Bissell will be the only representative for the Timberwolves at Saturday’s district tournament.

Bissell decked Clarinda Academy’s David Spencer in 45 seconds to advance to the semifinals, where he picked up a 7-6 decision over second-seeded Brock Bentley of Riverside.

Bissell lost by fall in 3:59 to top-seeded Timmy Barr of AHSTW in the finals, but did not have to wrestle back for second place.
