Wolverines, EU’s Harper claim POI titles

LAMONI — Nodaway Valley’s “Black Plague” posted its third perfect score of the season here Tuesday, claiming the Pride of Iowa Conference championship at Graceland University’s campus.

Sophomore Shane Breheny paced the Wolverine boys, claiming the individual title, with his time of 16:53 over the 5K course. Breheny’s cousin, East Union sophomore Emma Harper won the girls individual title by edging out Nodaway Valley’s Destiny Scar by two seconds.

Interstate 35 took the girls team title with 37 points, 21 points ahead of East Union. Southwest Valley finished third with 95 points in the girls team standings.

Behind Breheny in the boys race, were Nodaway Valley juniors Heath Downing in second and Nate Venteicher in third, with sophomore Brayten Funke taking fourth and freshman Brycen Wallace finishing fifth.

Skyler Rawlings finished 10th and Matthew Dickinson placed 13th, putting all seven Nodaway Valley varsity runners in the top 15.

Lenox’s Jacob Bolinger finished eighth in 18:11. Southwest Valley was led by Lane Peterson in 14th place, with his time of 19:07. Casey Walter paced East Union in 26th, running 20:49. Mount Ayr was led by Will Young in 49th, running 22:37.

East Union’s Harper won a two-person race with Scar to take the girls title, running 15:07 to Scar’s 15:09 on the 4K course. Southeast Warren’s Elise Emmick ran third in 15:45.

Harper’s EU teammate Alyssa Proffitt finished fifth in 16:14. Southwest Valley’s Kendra Top ran 16:28 for seventh place and Mount Ayr was paced by Adrian Richards in ninth place, with her time of 16:41.

Ashley Lucio finished 19th for Lenox, running 17:41.
