Claudette Young - Afton

Claudette Sue Young, 70, of Afton died Friday, October 10, 2014 at the Afton Care Center in Afton.

Celebration of Life services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014 at the Powers Funeral Home 612 N. Dodge St. in Afton. Pastor Dwayne Henrichs will officiate. Burial will be private at a later date at the Wheelis Cemetery near Grand River. Open visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Memorials will be determined at a later date. Claudette Sue (Briner) Young, daughter of Violet (Grimm) and Burl Briner, was born on November 19, 1943 in Ringgold County. Her early childhood years were spent in Ringgold County near Ellston, where she attended country school.

Sue was united in marriage on Jan. 19, 1961 to Ted McWilliams and they became the parents of six children, Tammy, Teresa, Tim, Tina, Terri and Traci.

They later divorced. Sue later met and married Garry Young and moved to Colorado. She also was acquainted with Fred Engebretson before returning to Iowa in June of 2013.

Sue worked as a waitress and cashier, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family. She also enjoyed embroidering, watching movies, her pets and horse riding.

Sue is survived by her children; Tammy (husband Billy) Doggett of Kellerton, Teresa (husband Al) Rager of Thayer, Tim (wife Lori) McWilliams of Arvada, Colo., Terri McWilliams of Davis City and Traci (husband Paul) Castillo of Westminster, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; one great grandson; 5 step-grandchildren; 7 step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Earl (wife Colleen) Briner of Tingley, Van (wife Elaine) Briner of Agency and Greg (wife Doris) Briner of Tingley; three sister, Pam (husband Dan) Weigel of Greenfield, Debbie Briner of Grant City, Mo. and Candell Smith of Leon; a brother-in-law, George Dailey of Maloy and many other family members and friends.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Tina McWilliams in 1985; two brothers, Tyrone and Richard Briner and two sisters, Alverta Dailey and Jo Quetta Briner in infancy.
