Carl Patterson

Carl Patterson, 78, of Corning died July 13, 2014, at his home in Corning.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, July 17, at Pearson Family Funeral Service, 701 Seventh St., Corning. Chuck Lyles will officiate. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Corning. Open visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Visitation with family present will be 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. prior to the service Thursday at the funeral home. Carl Calvin Patterson, son of Wavel Marie (Hickman) and James Donovan Patterson, was born April 10, 1936, in Chariton.

Carl was educated in the Chariton Public schools and graduated from Chariton High School in 1954.

On Aug. 12, 1956, Carl married Delena Henry in Lucas.

Carl began working for Hy-Vee Food Stores in Shenandoah as the produce manager and was later promoted to assistant manager. He continued there for 10 years before accepting the store manager’s position in Corning in 1964. Carl retired in 1988 after 34 years of service to Hy-Vee.

Carl was a member of Corning Christian Church and served the church in many different ways. Carl served for several years as the treasurer of the ACIC and on the board of directors for the Corning Municipal Utilities. He was a long-time member of Corning Rotary Club and was named as a Paul Harris Fellow recipient. Carl volunteered as an ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce and delivering Meals on Wheels for several years.

Carl is survived by is his wife Delena Patterson of Corning; daughters, Carla Steele (significant other Mark Gathercole) of Des Moines and Paula (Mark) Jones of Omaha, Neb.; granddaughters, Alison, Anna, Lindsay and Whitney; great-grandchildren, Kailee, Micah and Jaylen; brother Guy Dean (wife Moe) Patterson of San Antonio, Texas;
sisters, Grace Ann (Don) Holmes of Chariton and Ida Mae (Billy) Carpenter of Allerton; sister-in-law Kay (Tom) Fry of Corydon; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; mother- and father-in law; brother Tom Patterson and brother-in-law Bill McClaflin.
