Richard ‘Buck’ McBroom LeRoy

Richard “Buck” McBroom, 82, of LeRoy died July 10, 2014, at Homestead of Osceola in Osceola.

Graveside funeral services were 1 p.m. Monday, July 14, at Metier Cemetery in Weldon. The Rev. Dale O’Connell officiated. Burial was in Metier Cemetery. Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home, Leon, was in charge of arrangements.

Richard Keith “Buck” McBroom, son of Vera Neal (Hockensmith) and James Keith McBroom, was born Feb. 10, 1932, in Decatur County near LeRoy.

Buck, as he was known, grew up in the Garden Grove area and attended Garden Grove Schools.

At 17, Buck joined the United States Air Force. He served from Jan. 13, 1950, until Nov. 23, 1953.

On Sept. 25, 1952, Buck married Patricia Jean Barnard in Indianola.

Buck was in the Air Force, so they lived in California, Alaska, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Nebraska and then back in Iowa.

In 1969, they bought their farm outside of LeRoy. Buck farmed, and Pat was a homemaker.

Buck participated in some of the activities at LeRoy Presbyterian Church.

Buck is survived by his children, Kyle and Susan McBroom of Urbandale, Karen Abel of Weldon and Scott and Jill McBroom of West Des Moines; grandchildren, Lindsay, Ashleigh and Michael, Patrick, Sarah and Matt, Zach, Andrea and Bob, Abbie and Kaleb, Dylan and Sean; great-grandchildren, Jada, David, Joseph, Marcus, Ava, Gracie and Ryan; sisters, Kathryn and Roger Grimm of Osceola and Rosa Niday of Plattsburg, Mo.; half brother, James McBroom of Decatur; sister-in-law Beverly and Harry Oxford of Hoyt Lakes, Minn.; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Buck was preceded in death by his parents, wife June 18, 2014, and brother Clovis “Toby” McBroom.
