Laverne McCarty, 83, of Prescott died March 3, 2014, at Corning Nursing and Rehab, after struggling with many health issues over the past few years.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 6, at Prescott Disciples of Christ Church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Prescott. Open visitation will be 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday with family present 5 to 7 p.m. at Pearson Family Funeral Service, 701 Seventh St., Corning. Memorials may be given to Kline Museum in Prescott or the family.
Charles Laverne “Vern” McCarty, son of Nellie Mae (Freeman) and Charles Daniel McCarty, was born April 3, 1930, in the countryside north of Prescott.
Vern graduated from Prescott High School in 1947.
Vern served in the Iowa National Guard after high school.
On July 26, 1959, Vern married Veda Marie Bailey in Anita.
Vern was a farmer. Shortly after graduating from high school, Vern bought the farm adjacent to his father’s.
Vern is survived by his children, Katie (husband Tim) Rhamy of Corning, Karl (wife Julie) McCarty of Prescott, Kimberly (husband Michael) Fourez of Corning and Karen (husband Mark) Finck of Rock Valley; sister Carol (husband Ken) Foster of Creston; sister-in-law Vesta Duensing of Metaire, La.; brother-in-law Varel (wife Jackie) Bailey of Anita; grandchildren, Ryan and Rusty Rhamy, Alexander and Ciara McCarty, Miaya Fourez and Lyla, Rebecca and Tyrel Finck; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Thomas and Iris Bailey, and brother-in-law Loren Duensing.
