Full makeover: Hanson Fitness to open Feb. 1 in Creston

A line of treadmills are set up against the north wall, with stationary bicycles and ellipticals in a row behind them at what will soon be Hanson Fitness.

Hanson Fitness, a physical fitness and health facility located at 520 Livingston Ave., Suite C, in Creston, will cater to a variety of lifestyles.

Tyler Hanson, 32, and his wife Tori are opening Hanson Fitness, as well as re-opening Tori’s salon, The Color Secret, within the space. The projected opening date is Feb. 1.

Hanson Fitness

The idea of Hanson Fitness became a reality in November 2013, when Hanson and his wife finalized the lease on the space, attached to the west side of The Pizza Ranch.

“I’ve been in fitness my whole entire life, started when I was 12 years old,” Hanson said. “The opportunity came up. I had a friend that owned a gym in Waukee, and he was looking to get out, so he offered me a pretty good deal on all this equipment.”

Hanson, a 2000 graduate of Creston High School and 2006 graduate of Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo., with a degree in corporate health and wellness, will offer cardio, resistance training and personal training at Hanson Fitness.

“I thought Creston could use something, you know, with more convenience-type, 24-hour-type deal,” Hanson said.

As a 24-hour fitness center, members will have a card to slide in front of a reader to get in the building for times when staff are not on duty at the facility.

“They have the YMCA, which is great. They offer a lot of great programs there for kids and adults, and different classes, but Creston doesn’t have a convenience-type, 24-hour access,” Hanson said. “We have more cardio here, more resistance training, which the Y doesn’t.”

Hanson has dumbbells in varying weights and 18 different weight machines available, as well as treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bicycles and a stair climber.

Services

For those interested in one-on-one time, personal training sessions are available for an additional fee.

Sessions per month can be bought as singles, in packs or as an unlimited package. In the unlimited package, with as many sessions per month as the member wants, Hanson will also outfit the member with a meal plan based on many variables, such as goals, likes and dislikes.

“It’s $200 for unlimited. One session is $30, three sessions is $65, five sessions is $100, and so forth,” said Hanson. “Anyone with 10 sessions or more, you get a meal plan with your personal training.”

Cost

The cost to join Hanson Fitness is dependant on age, payment type and insurance.

Per month, memberships cost $19.99 for students ages 20 years and younger. Costs increase to $24.99 for single adults 21 years of age and older. Family memberships are $34.99, and senior citizen memberships are $19.99.

New members must pay a $30 enrollment fee, but that fee can be waived if members sign up for automatic withdrawal from their checking accounts. And, Hanson Fitness does not have contracts.

“There is no long-term commitment,” Hanson said. “Just have to give 30-day notice when you want to cancel.”

One way Hanson Fitness is pushing healthy living is by partnering with insurance company United Healthcare.

“Whoever has health insurance through them, and joins, and goes 12 times a month gets a $20 refund a month from United,” Hanson said.

Hanson also said the facility is working on partnering with Blue Cross Blue Shield, but he is waiting on details with the insurance company.

The Color Secret

Hanson’s wife, Tori, owner of The Color Secret, will be moving the salon into a walled-off space in Hanson Fitness. New hours will be available after the move.

“The reasons I’m moving over there are better location and better parking,” Tori said.

The Color Secret will have the same services available, which include cuts, colors, extensions, waxing and spray tanning.

“I specialize in color, and extensions are my specialty,” Tori said. “My signature deal is a $5 men’s hair cut.”

Tori will offer a discount to clients if they are members of Hanson Fitness.

“I’m pretty established here, but I mean, if I got more clients that would be great, too,” said Tori. “I’m hoping that, you know, all my clients follow me over there, and if I get more clients from the fitness center, that’s cool.”

The salon opens the same day as Hanson Fitness. The Color Secret is currently located at 111 W. Montgomery St.
