Lucas Sweeney Greenfield

Lucas Sweeney, 23, of Greenfield died Dec. 16, 2013, at Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, at the United Methodist Church in Greenfield. The Rev. Eric Schubert will officiate. Burial will be in Carl Cemetery, rural Corning. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today with family present 6 to 8 p.m. at Steen Funeral Home, 101 S.E. Fourth St., Greenfield. Lucas Jon Sweeney, son of Debora (Shires) and Jon Sweeney, was born Dec. 9, 1990, in Creston.

Lucas lived in Lenox, until moving to a farm near Prescott in 1995. He attended school in Prescott and Creston before moving to Fontanelle in 2001. Lucas graduated from Nodaway Valley High School in 2010.

Lucas was involved in Special Olympics and participated in bowling, basketball, cycling and track and field. He also attended Camp Sunnyside.

Lucas is survived by his mother Deb Westphal of Greenfield and friend Roger Walter; sisters, Alicia (husband Ryan) Lens of Creston and Tonya (husband Jon) Waters of Massena; nephews, Austin Sweeney, Bryson Lens and Corbin Waters; niece Hallie Keeler; maternal grandparents, Myron and Jan Shires of Greenfield; stepfather Larry (Zoomer) Westphal of Fontanelle; uncles, Darwin (Lori) Shires, Donald (Jen) Shires and Danny (Sally) Shires, all of Corning, Kevin (Debbie) Sweeney of Lenox and Larry Sweeney of Creston; aunts, Donna Shires of Clarinda, Alice Reed of Prescott and Shelley Pettit of Des Moines; numerous cousins and friends.

Lucas was preceded in death by his father; paternal grandparents, Bill and Marge Sweeney; and cousin Shane Sweeney.
