Helen Kingery, 87, of Creston died Oct. 28, 2013, at Crest Haven Care Centre.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Edward's Cemetery in Afton. The Rev. Ken Halbur will officiate. Open visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today with family present 6 to 8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25. There will be a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or Holy Spirit Parish. Helen Theresa Fluckey, daughter of Martha (Osfalg) and Frank Fluckey, was born Feb. 22, 1926, on a farm south of Thayer.
Helen graduated from Arispe High School in 1943, attended Creston Junior College for one year, and then taught at a rural school in Sand Creek Township.
On June 22, 1946, Helen married Darrell Kingery.
While raising her children, Helen taught in rural schools in Dodge and Highland Townships. She continued her education at Drake University, where she received a
bachelor's degree in 1968. She taught at Cromwell and Lincoln and Franklin Schools in Creston, until retiring in 1984.
Helen is survived by her husband Darrell; children, Dennis (wife Karlene) of Omaha, Neb., Jean Ann Fregia (husband Ronnie) of Orange, Texas, and Scott (wife Cathy) of Jefferson; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, sister Evelyn Mathes of Afton, brother Robert (wife Marilyn) of Murray and sister-in-law Catherine Fluckey of Creston.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, brother Joe; sisters, Frances Justice and Marie Hudson; and brothers-in-law, John Justice, Ralph Hudson and George Mathes.
