Johnny Carson Birthplace restoration to be revealed

CORNING — With the help of a community attraction and tourism grant through the state tourism office of the Iowa Economic Development Authority, the Johnny Carson Birthplace Society Board hired historic architect Douglas Steinmetz to develop the plan using historic pictures, information from local historians and his knowledge of construction practices from the period of Carson’s birth, circa 1925.

During the tear-out phase, the restoration team discovered marks that had been torn out during previous modernizations.

The project was delayed while the architect and construction team discussed with the board how to proceed.

During that time, earlier pictures were discovered that correlated more directly to the period of time the Carson family lived at the house. The plans were changed to incorporate the new findings.

To learn more about this design and visit Carson’s restored birthplace, join the Johnny Carson Birthplace Society Board as they unveil the restoration at Carson’s birthday celebration Oct. 23. The birthplace home, 500 13th Street, Corning, will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a special program at 2 p.m.
