The Iowa Girls Coaches Association released its 2013 All-State Softball Teams Tuesday, and a total of nine area players received all-state honors.
Headlining the list of area all-staters is Creston sophomore Haylee LaMasters, a third-teamer in Class 4A and a pair of Murray first-teamers in Class 1A in Danielle McIntosh and Kate Patton.
LaMasters progresses
LaMasters entered the 2013 season taking on a new role for a new-look Panther team, taking on the bulk of the pitching duties, and playing the tough act of following five-time all-stater Madison Frain.
And LaMasters did a solid job in her new role, proving that she’s more than capable of being the ace of pitching staff, said Creston head coach Mike McCabe.
“I hope she does (feel like that). I feel that way,” McCabe said. “I think it just shows she has a little bit of respect from her peers in the conference and coaches. I thought she had a really nice conference season. To help lead us where we finished in fourth place and stay in it the majority of the year, and she took on a little bigger role this year.
“Kind of a dual role,” McCabe continued. “It’s different than when you’re out there playing a position and playing offensively. Now all of a sudden, you’ve gotta go out there and pitch. It’s tough. I was still pleased with her offensive numbers. She had a real productive season on both sides of the ball. It’s a good honor for her, and hopefully that inspires her and motivates her in the offseason, and I’m sure it will.”
It’s the first all-state honor for LaMasters, who finished the season with an 18-15 record in the pitching circle, striking out 211 batters in 191 innings pitched with an earned run average of 3.30. She was 11-6 in conference games.
And, after leading the Hawkeye 10 Conference in hitting during conference games last year, she followed up with another year of respectable offensive numbers.
LaMasters hit .355 with 10 doubles, one triple and five home runs, driving in 31 runs.
“I was real pleased with the fact Haylee made it,” McCabe said. “I kind of expected or hoped she would. I think 4A was an absolutely loaded class this year. I think to make any of those three teams is a real honor. Looking up and down those three teams there, there’s some real nice players. A nice little honor for her. Each year she’s progressed a little bit.”
Murray trio
The Murray Mustangs were rewarded for their 25-7 season by placing three players on all-state teams, including first-teamers McIntosh and Patton.
Senior Cydney Hembry was named to the Class 1A third team.
“That’s a pretty awesome feeling,” Murray head coach Danny Jensen said. “I was somewhat surprised we were able to get three, but the kids that made it were top-quality players for Class 1A. It’s a real tribute to the kids. It says a lot for the program.”
McIntosh, a senior who earned first-team honors in Class 3A last year for Clarke, led the Mustangs with a batting average of .459, 16 doubles and eight home runs, while adding two triples and 38 RBI.
She also took some of the pressure off Patton in the pitching circle, throwing in 19 games, with a record of 13-6 to go with a 1.02 earned run average and 144 strikeouts in 109 2/3 innings.
“Danielle was impressive offensively,” Jensen said. “She was second or third in the state in home runs. But, she made it, I think, based on she is a very good defensive player. She only had six errors, playing two positions. A lot of people don’t realize how good of a defensive player she is, too.”
But perhaps the biggest asset McIntosh brought to the Mustangs this season was experience.
“These past four years, we’ve struggled, quite honestly,” Jensen said. “I think she brought a lot of intensity to the table. She was the leader we needed. She was able to encourage the kids. She did a lot of the pregame talks to the kids.”
And with less pressure on Patton thanks to McIntosh’s arrival, Patton blossomed in her junior campaign.
Patton finished a perfect 12-0 in the pitching circle this season, striking out 110 batters in 92 innings with an earned run average of 1.22.
A career .400 hitter, Patton stayed right in line with that, batting .412 for the season, collecting 42 hits and scoring 44 runs. She rapped seven doubles, five triples, two home runs and drove in 16 runs. She also stole 37 bases in 37 attempts.
“Kate does it all,” Jensen said. “It really starts for us with her speed and what she can do on the basepaths. Her pitching was much improved this year. I think sharing the time with Danielle really helped. She was more than willing as a teammate to give up half the pitching to Danielle, and really enjoyed playing shortstop, as well.
“Kate didn’t have to carry us this year so much with the addition of those two seniors,” he continued. “I think there was a lot less pressure on Kate this year, and she played a little more relaxed. She only struck out four times in 112 at-bats, so she cut that way down.”
Hembry made the Class 1A third team after hitting .446 with 12 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 24 RBI. She also played strong defensively at first base, Jensen said.
“Her defensive numbers were really good,” he said. “She had 208 chances this year and committed just four errors. A really good .981 percentage. She handled the bunt well. Just brought a lot of ‘captainship’ in the infield and made all the calls. She did the talking the entire night. She was the leader of our infield.”
Dukes third team
Lenox sophomore Katie Dukes was named to the Class 1A third team after helping lead the Tigers to an 18-14 season.
Dukes hit .360 for the season with four doubles, four triples, two home runs and 19 RBI. She collected 40 hits for the season and scored 41 runs and stole 27 bases in 29 attempts.
“I always reiterate the comment that an opposing school, their AD was taking care of getting lineups before the game, and I gave him the lineup,” Lenox head coach Tom Shields said. “I said ‘Dukes.’ He said, ‘Oh, she’s the one that scores every time she gets on base.’ I always tell her, she sets the table. She gets on base, good things are going to happen for us. We’re very pleased for the recognition for her, and of course, it will put more pressure on her for next year. She’ll be a good cornerstone to have and to build around.”
Lenox senior third baseman Madison Douglas was named honorable mention in Class 1A. Douglas hit .296 with four doubles, three triples and two home runs, while driving in a team-high 26 runs for the Tigers.
“I think we batted her fifth in the lineup the last two years, and this year we moved her up to the three-slot, and that maybe affected the number of RBI she got, but for the most part, it was a pretty solid season,” Shields said. “All-in-all, capped off a good career.”
Honorable mention
Three other area players joined Douglas on the Class 1A honorable mention team.
Corning senior pitcher Ella Akin and junior first baseman Sydney Pontius, along with East Union senior third baseman Rochelle Means all received honorable mention.
Akin hit .247 for the season with one double and 11 RBI, while finishing 14-15 in the pitching circle with an earned run average of 3.56 and 127 strikeouts in 183 innings pitched.
Pontius led the Red Raiders offensively, hitting .408 with team highs in doubles (13), triples (1), RBI (24) and finished second in home runs with three.
Means hit .293 for East Union, knocking three doubles with one triple and a team-high 16 RBI.
