CORNING — Justin Cooper claimed his first career late model feature win on a night when the cold and wet relented just enough to let the cars take to the track Saturday at the Adams County Speedway.
Jeremy Auten used a last lap pass to capture the crown in the Chat Mobility hobby stocks while Jerod Weston got win number two in four starts this season in the Stalker Chevrolet b-mods.
Kevin Sharp’s white flag lap pass for the win in the Northland Oil pro-stocks brought the crowd to their feet and Jeff Wiggins got his first win of the season in the Poet Biorefining modifieds.
Bedford’s Joe Murphy took advantage of his outside row one starting position to lead the first 14 laps of the 15-lap feature, but Clarinda’s Jeremy Auten took the win by moving into second place at the white flag and passing Murphy for the lead on the last trip down the back stretch. Murphy slipped to third at the finish behind Jeremy Purdy with Andy Davidson and Jamie Songer right behind.
B-mods
Two red flags interrupted the Stalker Chevrolet b-mod feature. The first came on lap number three when Shawn Kralik and Matt Herring tied their two cars together in turn two. Safety crews had to remove a wheel from Kralik’s car to get the two apart. On lap 12 Adam Smith and Troy Hardisty were caught up in a scary crash as Smith was exiting the track. Ambulances rushed to the scene but fortunately there were no injuries.
In racing action it was Jerod Weston getting win number two for the season passing Josh Sink with five laps to go. Josh Cooper moved into second relegating Sink to third with Ron Ballinger and Brett Sheppard in fourth and fifth.
Pro stocks
Creston’s Kevin Sharp broke a three year winless drought in the Northland Oil pro-stocks. Sharp passed last week’s winner Tony Hardisty as they came to the white flag and then held on for the win. Defending points champion Greg Miller was third followed by Craig Garner and Joe Zadina.
Six caution flags slowed the Poet Biorefining modifieds during their 18-lap feature race. Greenfield’s Jeff Wiggins managed to avoid the carnage by moving to the lead on lap number six and never looked back. Larry Foote, John Davis, Keven Parman, and Brian Foote rounded out the top five.
Late models
The Coors Light Silver Bullet late models closed out the evening with 25 laps broken up with multiple caution flags sending some of the top drivers to the back of the pack. JC Wyman, Chris Spieker, and Jason O’Brien all made trips to the back of the field due to caution flags and had to fight thru traffic on a dry-slick race track.
Prescott’s Justin Cooper drove a flawless race to claim his first feature division win. Cooper started behind pole sitter Karl Getschman and passed John Hampel on lap 10 to take the lead. The two battled and swapped the lead one more time with Cooper holding the lead at the end. Paul Glendenning finished second followed by Jason O’Brien in third. JC Wyman and Justin Zeitner followed in fourth and fifth.
Hall of Fame
At intermission the inaugural class of the Adams County Speedway Hall of Fame was inducted. Gail and Karen Hampel were inducted as promoters, while Dave Chase, Dusty Whitehead, and the late Varel Schmidt were inducted as drivers. Outstanding contributors to the track were Harry Wiechman and Lawrence Peterson. Inducted as lifetime fans were Wendell Bell and the late C.R. “Dick” Miller.
