Students awarded Kelly Laughery Scholarships

GREENFIELD — Ten area students were awarded Kelly Laughery 4-H Community Service scholarships. Recipients of the $200 scholarships were; Brad Baudler, Chisum Downing, Kysa Downing, Dean Frank, Tyler Ford, Lisa Marnin, Judd Martin, Ashley Thompson, Shelby Venticher and Alex Welsh.

Baudler is the son of Cliff and Sondra Baudler. He is a member of Summerset Citizens 4-H Club and Adair County 4-H Youth Council. He volunteered his time planting trees, painting at the fairgrounds, worked at MICAH house and organizing a five-day camp called Brains and Basketball.

Chisum Downing is the son of Steve and Karen Downing. He is a member of Orient Bulldogs and Adair County 4-H Youth Council. He has helped serve at the Ronald McDonald House, worked to improve the fairgrounds and assisted with numerous day camps.

Kysa Downing is the daughter of Steve and Karen Downing. She is a member of the Orient Bulldogs and Adair County 4-H Youth Council. She has volunteered chaperoning dances, helping woman and children at MICAH house and organizing a clothing drive resulting in 880 pounds of clothing.

Frank is the son of Brett and Jennifer Welsch. He is a member of Summerset Citizens 4-H Club and Adair County 4-H Youth Council. He has volunteered at the Fontanelle nursing home, helped at the fair and served meals at the Ronald McDonald House.

Ford is the son of Carl and Chris Ford. He is a member of Washington Stars and Adair County 4-H Youth Council. He has volunteered his time planting flowers in his community, reading to preschoolers at the BF preschool and helping display flags on Memorial Day.

Marnin is the daughter of Allen and Susan Marnin. She is a member of Summerset Citizens and Adair County 4-H Youth Council. She has volunteered her time at the nursing home, cleaned the grandstand at the county fair and served meals for teachers during conferences.

Martin is the son of Joe and Vanessa Martin. He is a member of Washington Stars and Adair County 4-H Youth Council. He has volunteered his time cleaning parks, helping with fair activities and planning the annual Speak out for Agriculture trip.

Thompson is the daughter of Jeff and Ranae Thompson. She is a member of Adair County Hot Shots. She has spent many hours delivering treats to the community, painting at the fairgrounds and donating gifts to a local family.

Venteicher is the daughter of Kurt and Ami Venteicher. She is a member of Summerset Citizens. She has volunteered her time painting the Good Samaritan Center, sprucing up Fontanelle Park and donating hygiene products to MICAH house.

Welsch is the son of Brett and Jennifer Welsch and Ann Gribbons. He is a member of Summerset Citizens and Adair County 4-H Youth Council. He has helped paint the barn and fences at the fairgrounds, send Christmas cards to soldiers in foreign nations and volunteered at many day camps.

The scholarships honor the memory of Kelly Laughery. Laughery was a member of Adair County 4-H Youth Council from 2000-2004. In her short life, she reached out and served her community in many ways from spearheading a cemetery restoration project to working at hundreds of day camps. While a senior at Nodaway Valley, she was the co-organizer of an all high school service day. She continued to volunteer as a student at Iowa State University until her life was cut short by a drunk driver. Her legacy of service continues through the service efforts of Adair County 4-H’ers.

Contributions to the special scholarship endowment fund are accepted on an on-going basis at Adair County Extension.
