CHS students to hold Fine Arts Fest

It is said music and art can heal the mind, and what better way than to have a night devoted to Creston High School fine arts.

“This is a good thing for our community to see what the fine arts are doing, not just the band,” said Creston High School band director Mike Peters. “But I want them to see what the speech kids are doing, the vocal kids. I want them to see what the art kids are doing.”

Fine Arts Fest, as the performance has come to be known, will be 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday at Creston High School. The fest will include speech, vocal, high school and middle school jazz bands, high school and middle school drum lines, winter guard and solo and ensemble performances.

The performances will be set up so no one has to choose between one show or another. Each performance will be at a different time, with band, vocal and speech students performing 5 to 7 p.m., and percussion shows starting at 7 p.m., in the gymnasium.

During the fest, there will be an open dessert bar, with desserts donated by band parents. Art projects will be on display in the high school commons.

“We have a Florida trip coming up,” said Peters. “It’s a good fundraiser for the kids to try to make some money.”

Peters is in charge of the set list, while band parents and Peters’ wife Lisa, Winter Guard coach, are in charge of desserts and organizing posters and tickets.

EAST students will be making posters, and iJAG students are making tickets. Tickets are $5 and available for purchase from band students or at the door April 7.

“It’ll be cool to have a last performance that’s not judged, and we don’t have to worry about anything,” said junior Andy Smith. “We can just go out there and have fun and play our hearts out.”
