Class 1A

CORNING — Four area wrestlers achieved their goals of making it to the state wrestling tournament by finishing in the top two of their respective weight classes at Saturday’s Class 1A District 7 wrestling tournament here.

Mount Ayr’s Erik Freed (132), Nodaway Valley’s Kain Queck (152) and East Union’s Bryson Kinyon (170) each advanced as champions of their weight classes. Corning’s Zach Barton (182) advanced thanks to a come-from-behind victory in his wrestleback match against Panorama’s Colby Woodvine.

Mount Ayr senior Shane Swank saw his career come to a heartbreaking end in his wrestleback match at 160 pounds against Panorama’s Tyler Hein.

After losing 5-2 in the championship match, Swank looked to be in control of Hein, leading 2-0, when Hein suddenly flipped Swank onto his back and pinned him.

Other near misses included Corning junior Logan Wood in third place at 106 pounds, Mount Ayr junior Dawson Knapp third at 113 pounds, Nodaway Valley senior Jared Thompson third at 138 pounds and Nodaway Valley junior Jaydn Erlandson third at 145 pounds.

Panorama took the team title in a close battle with Guthrie Center, 74-73, while Underwood finished third with 69.5 points. Mount Ayr finished sixth with 39, Nodaway Valley eighth with 36, Corning 11th with 22 points and East Union 13th with 19.5 points.

HARLAN — Bedford/Lenox’s Cole Bonde advanced to the state tournament as champion of the Class 2A District 5 182-pound bracket.

Bonde was one of two Bedford/Lenox wrestlers to advance to the state tournament, as Dylon French won a wrestleback match at 160 pounds over Tyler Kutz of South Central Calhoun.

Grant Christensen (152) finished third, as did Dusten Reed, who lost a wrestleback at 113 pounds.

Class 2A District 5
