Robert Harpin, 92, of Creston died Jan. 22, 2013, at Crest Haven Care Centre.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25. The Rev. Jim Morris will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Theodore J. Martens VFW Post No. 1797 of Creston. Open visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m. Friday with family present 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Robert William Harpin, son of Anna Clara (Hucke) and Noah Jackson Harpin, was born Oct. 11, 1920, in Union County.
Robert graduated from Zion High School in 1939.
Robert served in the U.S. Army from Oct. 18, 1942, to Jan. 13, 1946, during WWII.
After returning from the military, he lived in Denver, Colo., for a short time, working as a contractor.
He returned to the Creston area in 1948, where he farmed the majority of his life.
Robert was a 4-H leader for 10 years, committee member on several government farm programs, former member of the sheriff’s posse, a Lincoln Township Trustee for 25 years and a more than 50-year member of Greenfield Crusade Masonic Lodge No. 386.
Robert is survived by many nieces and nephews and a neighborhood that was his other family.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Delmar, Vernet, Verlin, Noris and Joe Harpin; and sisters, Moadelyn Looney and Bernice Culp.
