June Ellen Smith, 55, of Mount Ayr died Aug. 15, 2012, at her home, after a battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, at the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr. The Rev. Skip Rushing will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr. Visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. Saturday with family present 5 to 8 p.m. at Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe St., Mount Ayr. A memorial fund has been established for the MAC Boosters/Athletic Department and Simply Voices, her singing sisters from the United Methodist Church. June Ellen Smith, daughter of Norma Lee and Harvey Lucien Krueger, was born June 29, 1957, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan.

June graduated from Oakland Community School in 1975. She attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls for two years and then transferred to Dana College in Blair, Neb. June graduated in 1979 with a degree in elementary education.

On Dec. 27, 1980, June married James Lynn Smith.

After their marriage, they moved to Mount Ayr.

June did substitute teaching and taught preschool at Big Bird Nursery.

After four years, June was hired to be the director of Cradles to Crayons Daycare. As the director, she managed the move of the center on two occasions. The final move was into their brand new facilities, the Family Resource Center.

In 1998, June began teaching kindergarten at Lamoni Community School. She taught kindergarten for two years and then moved into preschool/special education for five years.

In June 2006, June became a bank teller at U.S. Bank in Mount Ayr.

June was a member at and played the piano for the United Methodist Church for several years, as well as singing with James, the choir and Simply Voices.

June is survived by her husband James of Mount Ayr; sons, Joshua (wife Nicole) Smith and daughter Paisley of Fort Dodge, Michael Smith (fiancé Kelli Proctor) of Fort Dodge and Lucas Smith of Mount Ayr; brother David (wife Linda) Krueger; sisters, Joyce Krueger and Hope (husband Dave) Sonntag; brother Marvin (wife Julie) Krueger; and stepfather Eldon (wife Joan) Ellerbeck.

June was preceded in death by her parents.
