Haley earns second team all-district nod

The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches association announced its all-district teams for the 2012 season, and Creston sophomore Nate Haley was the only area player to be named to one of the all-district teams.

Haley, who saw time at pitcher, third base and designated hitter throughout the season, was named to the Class 3A West district second team as a utility player.

Haley finished second on the Panthers squad with a .378 batting average, collecting 31 hits — eight of which were doubles — and driving in 21 runs.

He also recorded a 3-1 record on the pitching rubber, holding opponents to a .222 batting average with an earned run average of 3.65, both of which were second best on the team. Haley struck out 16 batters in his 23 innings of work.

Haley made a name for himself this season thanks to his clutch timing, which led to several Panther victories, including the game-winning hit against Denison-Schleswig and a late season victory over a state-rated Adel-DeSoto-Minburn team in which Haley had a big run-scoring hit and picked up the win in relief.

Two Panthers narrowly missing election to the team were junior catcher Zach Powers and senior center fielder and pitcher Ben Landers.

Other Hawkeye 10 Conference players named to the all-district teams were in Class 3A, Denison junior first baseman Robert Lyons, Glenwood junior third baseman Alec Forbes and junior outfielder Mitch Bowden, Atlantic senior outfielder Gunner Blum and Harlan senior Ben Bruck, who all made the first team in the West district.

Making the second team with Haley were Harlan junior pitcher David Ratigan and senior catcher Zach Osborn, Denison senior second baseman Brady Thies, and senior utility player Austin Eller, along with Atlantic senior Blake Esbeck.

In Class 4A, Lewis Central senior first baseman Eric Scott made the first team in the West district, while freshman catcher Austin Simmons, senior second baseman Ethan George and senior utility player Nate Kramer were all named to the second team.

In the Class 2A Southwest district, Carroll Kuemper placed four on the first team, including junior pitcher Chris Halbur, juunior second baseman Carter Ludwig, junior third baseman Bryce Wessels and junior outfielder Logan Nolting.

The Knights also placed senior shortstop David Hicks on the second team.

Clarinda junior pitcher Dakota Woods and senior utility player Logan Wilham also made the first team in the Class 2A Southwest district.

Jeremiah Haug was named to the second team for the Cardinals.
