Softball all-district teams announced

Three Creston Panthers and eight other area athletes were named to the 2012 all-district softball teams as announced by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Tuesday.

Creston seniors Madison Frain and Katlin Briley, along with Panther freshman Haylee LaMasters all made the Class 4A West all-district team.

The Panther trio led the team in hitting, with LaMasters batting .475, Briley batting .469 and Frain hitting .386. They also accounted for a combined 68 RBI and 51 stolen bases.

Frain tallied a 27-6 record in the pitching circle for the Panthers, striking out 346 batters and finishing the season with a 0.73 earned run average. LaMasters had a 2-2 record in the circle while striking out 19 batters.

Creston coach Mike McCabe was also named the district coach of the year, leading the Panthers to a 29-8 record and the team’s third straight appearance in the regional finals.

Area

Area teams were well represented on the Class 1A Southwest all-district team, placing seven players on the 21-member squad.

Representing Lenox were junior infielder Madison Douglas, senior infielder Sami Borland and senior outfielder Katie Barker.

Douglas led the Tigers in hitting with a .396 average, one home run and 31 RBI. Borland hit .326 with two home runs and 29 RBI. Barker hit .262 with one home run and 20 RBI for the Tigers.

Representing Corning on the all-district team were senior catcher Adalina Morales, senior infielder Amber Longabaugh, and senior infielder Kelsey Roberts.

Morales batted .381 with one home run, 32 RBI and 32 stolen bases, leading the Red Raiders in average, RBI and stolen bases. Roberts hit .357 with one home run and 27 RBI. Longabaugh hit .336 with five home runs and 31 RBI.

Also on the Class 1A Southwest all-district team was Mount Ayr senior outfielder Megan Doubleday.

Doubleday was second on the Raider team with a .321 average while driving in seven runs and stealing eight bases.

Making the Class 1A South Central all-district team was Murray sophomore pitcher Kate Patton.

Patton had a .385 batting average, seven triples, two home runs, 24 RBI and 29 stolen bases, leading the Mustangs in each category. Patton also had a 13-16 record in the pitching circle with a 3.25 earned run average, while striking out 185 batters.
