‘The Bullpen’ now open, Creston business climate changes

A new Creston barber shop opened this month inside Country Cutters.

Scott Busch of Creston, an accomplished high school umpire in southwest Iowa, opened the doors to the “The Bullpen” barber shop July 5. Busch, who previously worked as the jail administrator in Clarke County, recently finished schooling at American College of Hairstyling in Des Moines.

“I made this move mostly to be closer to my family,” Busch said. “The barber shop is going to have an old-time barber shop feel where guys can talk about the weather, farming, family or sports. I just want customers to be comfortable and leave with a good experience and a good haircut.”

Busch is currently operating under a temporary license, but will be taking the state practical exam later this July. Men’s haircuts are $12, straight-razor face shaves are $8, a beard trim is $5 and outlines or lineups for ethnic hair are $5 at the Bullpen.

Busch will be open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesdays 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays 8 to 11 a.m. for walk-ins only. Busch said those hours, especially in the afternoon, are not set in concrete as he will continue umpiring football, basketball and baseball games.

Busch is located within Country Cutters, 205 N. Walnut, and Bullpen customers are to use the southeast door. For questions, customers can contact Busch at (641) 344-7987.

Wood TV

Russ Wood, owner of Wood TV, 811 N. Sumner Ave., will move out of his building Aug. 1, and Iowa State Extension will then begin moving from its current location,105 W. Adams St., to the Wood TV building.

Wood, who has conducted business in the building since 1971, said several factors went into his decision, but ultimately “times have changed” and he could no longer justify keeping his doors open with all the costs involved in running a small business.

Wood said he will continue offering all his current services, including DISH and Direct TV installation, service and television repair from his home. For service, continue calling (641) 782-5923.

Meanwhile, Iowa State Extension Office Assistant Deb Ruby said the main reason for the organization moving to the Wood TV building relates to the downsizing the organization went through two years ago, losing about half of its employees.

“We have a lot of empty desks right now,” Ruby said. “We are in the final year of our five-year lease at the building on Adams Street, so it made sense to save on rent and put that savings back into more programming. We are excited about the move as the location on the highway also provides us more visibility to the public.”

Iowa State Extension will beginning leasing from Wood Aug. 1. The tentative plan will be to remain open at its current location until Aug. 20. Extension employees will begin moving Aug. 20 and hope to be up and operational at the Wood TV location by Aug. 27.
