Stroud, Poore each win two 1A events

CORNING — Corning girls and Mount Ayr boys each placed second here Thursday in qualifying multiple events automatically for the State Coed Track and Field Meet at Drake Stadium May 17-19.

The Corning girls placed second with 109 points and the Mount Ayr boys were runner-up with 132 points in Class 1A competition involving 13 teams. Team champions were the Griswold girls (150) and Fremont-Mills boys (141).

The winner in each event at Class 1A state qualifying meets automatically advanced to the state meet. The next 10 best performances statewide from the state qualifying meets also advance.

Cutoff performances for other state qualifiers weren't available until after press time today.

Corning state champion sprinter Caitlyn Stroud was a double winner to earn automatic state berths in the 100 meters (12.73) and 200 meters (26.73). Corning picked up a third victory by freshman Marie Palmer in the discus, with a throw of 105 feet.

Lenox also had a freshman standout in the meet, as Katie Dukes captured the 400 meter dash in 1:00.90 and anchored the winning sprint medley relay (1:55.44).

The standout performer in the meet was also a freshman. Griswold's young phenom Rebekah Topham won four individual championships in the 400 meter hurdles, the 800 meter run, the 1,500 meter run, and the 3,000 meter run in leading her team to the district title.

Corning's Tiffany Shepherd was second to Topham in both the 800 and 1,500 meters and third in the 3,000 meters.

Mount Ayr girls placed fourth in the meet with 81 points and won the distance medley relay in 4:23.59.

Mount Ayr boys won three events. Braydee Poore, the Class 2A high jump champion last year, got on the right track in 1A competition this year by winning the event at 6-01. He also won the 110 meter high hurdles in 16.12, and teammate Jacob Sobotka took the 400 meters in 51.65.
