Mittag, Henkenius play on all-star teams

GRIMES — Tessa Mittag of Orient-Macksburg and Wyatt Henkenius of Corning were members of the Southwest Iowa teams that competed in the 2012 Iowa Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Games Saturday at Dallas Center-Grimes High School.

Mittag was a member of the SW Iowa girls team that placed third, losing 72-70 to Northeast Iowa in the first game before edging Southeast Iowa, 92-91, in the consolation game.

In the loss to Northeast, Mittag scored four points on a 3-pointer and free throw. Olivia Sulentic of Interstate 35 had seven points, Kerri Potthoff of Carroll Kuemper had six points, Alexia Fisher of Glenwood tallied nine points and Morgan Halverson of Martensdale-St. Marys scored eight points. Guthrie Center's Leah Courtney had a team-high 13 points.

Mittag had a 3-pointer for her three points in the consolation game. Other scorers included Sulentic with a team-high 18, Fisher 14, Potthoff nine and Halverson three.

Casey Kasperbauer of Carroll scored a game-high 29 points for Southwest Iowa boys in the 93-78 opening loss to Northeast Iowa. Carter Daniel of Kuemper had seven points, Harlan's Zach Osborn six and Zach Himmelberg of Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton four. Henkenius did not score.

In the 87-85 consolation loss to Southeast Iowa, Kasperbauer again was the leader with 22 points. Osborn added 13, Henkenius had seven points including a 3-pointer, and Daniel and Himmelberg each tallied four.

Former Iowa State player Julius Michalik, now the Neola Tri-Center coach, was head coach for the Southwest Iowa girls team, assisted by Adam Mich of Denison-Schleswig. Southwest Iowa boys coaches were Mike O'Connor and Will Nailor of West Des Moines Dowling Catholic.
