LAMONI — The Creston girls track team claimed a pair of relay titles and had one individual champion on its way to a runner-up team effort here Saturday at the Graceland University Bruce Jenner Girls Indoor Invitational.

Corning had a pair of championship efforts and finished three points behind Creston (87-84) in third place. St. Joseph Central out of Missouri dominated the day with 148.5 points.

Leading the Panthers were Emily Wignall and the winning 4x200 and distance medley relay teams.

Wignall struck gold in the 3,000-meter run with a clocking of 11:51.72. Kristen Carmichael of Corning was second in 12:17.14.

“That’s the kind of stuff she was running the middle of last season,” Arnold said of Wignall’s winning time.

The Panther coach added Wignall is extremely focused this spring after missing trips to state in the 1,500 last season and cross country in the fall.

The Creston 4x200 relay team of Brianna Maitlen, Chelcee Downing, Katlin Briley and Audrey Bolinger won in 1:54.94, while the distance medley foursome of Bolinger, Maitlen, Briley and Taylor Hudson crossed the line first in 4:40.54.

Neither relay team was threatened.

“We’ve been without some girls the last two weeks and we’re still putting together some good relays,” coach Clay Arnold said. “Katlin ran a 63 (400 meters) in the distance medley and blew everybody out of the water. I don’t think anyone was within 100 meters of Taylor the whole race.”

The Panther 4x800 relay team of Maddie Skarda, Hudson, Nicole Haley and Wignall placed second, as did Maitlen in the 55-meter hurdles. Third-place finishers for Creston were Briley in the 55, Bolinger in the 200 and Downing in the long jump.

Returning Class 1A 100-meter dash state champ Caitlyn Stroud of Corning blazed to the title in the 55 with a run of 7.42. Also taking gold for the Red Raiders was the 4x800 team of Steph Shuler, Melissa Winkler, Darrien Keefe and Tiffany Shepherd in 10:58.96.

Along with Carmichael in the 3,000, runner-up finishers for Corning were the distance medley team and Carmichael in the 1,500. Carly Pappas finished third in the shot put, as did the Red Raider 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams.

Murray also sent some athletes to Lamoni and the top finisher for the Lady Mustangs was returning state qualifier Kate Patton, with a runner-up time of 28.16 in the 200.
