Great minds think alike.
This is a sentiment customers can expect to have when they do business with J & A Flooring, which is owned by the father-son team of Joe and Andy Putz.
“We have our days, but it works pretty good,” Joe said of working with his son.
The duo opened J & A Flooring in March and have 15 years of experience working with flooring. This was one of the reasons they decided to open their own store.
“It just built up,” Joe said. “We got more and more requests for carpet, and the building became available. We figured, why not? So, here we are.”
Business
J & A Flooring is located at 804 S. Mulberry St., which is south of Taylor Street by Cook Video and Appliance. The store’s phone number is 641-278-1044.
So far, work has been good for the father-son team.
“There are a lot of people around town, and they’ve been supporting us really well,” Joe said. “It’s been great. They’re great supporters.”
The business offers various types of flooring, as well as a showroom to order carpet, laminate, vinyl, ceramic tile and wood.
The hours of the showroom are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
There is also a warehouse where in-stock products are stored to supply to customers.
“It’s kind of a whatever-you-need-type thing,” Joe said.
Decisions
It’s easy to figure out where the name of the store came from incorporating the initials of the owners’ names, but according to Joe, it was also about finding a name that would stick in people’s minds.
“We just finally decided on that, and it’s as good as any,” he said. “You got to have some name.”
One perk of people running their own business is the control they have making the important day-to-day decisions. This aspect is also true at J & A Flooring.
“We’ve been installers for years, and it’s hard for somebody who doesn’t do it out in the field everyday to understand the products and the way it goes to sell it,” Joe said. “We know if you need a certain thing or certain product, or what you’re going to need to get that product on the floor and get it right.”
“It helps to know what it’s like to install what you sell,” Andy added.
New things
Another perk of running a business is knowing something new could happen on any given day. In the flooring business, it’s about seeing different houses, places, people, floors and carpets.
“Some people pick out some pretty neat stuff to where you get to do something pretty neat,” Andy said.
