Raiders win boys title; I-35 claims girls

CORNING — The Mount Ayr boys track team turned in a total team effort here Tuesday night to handily win the Pride of Iowa Conference championship.

The Raiders crowned two individual champions and scored points in all but two events to roll up 107 points. Martensdale-St. Marys was a distant second with 76.

“The Raiders put together some of the finest performances of the season on a great night for the POI championships,” former Raider standout and current coach Brad Elliott said. “I couldn’t be prouder of the entire team for what they were able to accomplish tonight. We do a great job of motivating our kids and tonight that showed. We had some guys who normally score big for us compete injured and still score points.”

One of those injured Raiders is Cade Lambson, who battled through a back injury to set a new POI record in the discus with a winning toss of 168-feet 2-inches. The record was held by former Raider Chip Brundage. Lambson also took second in the shot put, while teammate Dustin Pritchett was third in the shot put and sixth in the discus.

Jordan Clymer was Mount Ayr’s other champion, with a winning time of 2:10.67 in the 800.

“I put a lot of emphasis on the 800 and I couldn’t be prouder to have a conference champion in that event,” Elliott said.

Braydee Poore gave the Raiders big points in the high jump with a runner-up finish.

On the track, the Raiders set season and personal bests in just about every event.

The 4x800 finished second behind season-best efforts from Dusty Lyden and Christian Overholtzer. Noah Larsen took 10 seconds off his best time for a fourth-place finish in the 3,200 and the shuttle hurdle team placed third with a season-best time.

“The turning point of the meet came in the 110 high hurdles, as both Korey Beaman and Braydee Poore scored big for us. After that all of the cards lined up,” Elliott said.

Personal-best times from Alex Sobotka (second) and Larsen (sixth) in the 1,600 gave the Raiders two scores, Jacob Sobotka placed sixth in the 200 with a personal-best time, Korey Beaman had his top time in a third-place effort in the 400 hurdles and the medley relay had a season-best time for fourth.

The title was clinched in the 800 when Clymer out-kicked 2010 champion Trent Verwers of Martensdale-St. Marys for the title and Raider Drake Schafer placed sixth. The 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams closed out the night with place finishes to add to the winning total.

“On the track we really raised our expectations and earned a lot of respect from our competitors,” Elliott said. “Winning in this conference isn’t easy and it is a great boost to the development of our program. It marks the 12th time Mount Ayr has won the Pride of Iowa title and numerous titles in the Tall Corn Conference. I participated on teams that won four POI’s in a row and I have to tell you this one takes the cake, it is very special to me as a coach.”

Nodaway Valley was the next highest area placing team with a seventh-place effort.

Spencer Scar gave the Wolverines an individual champion with his clocking of 23.53 in the 200. Runner-up finishers were Colton Graham in the 3,200 with a personal-best time of 10:45.95, Ben Schulteis in the discus and Jackson Shantz in the 400 low hurdles. The shuttle hurdle team placed fifth and set a new school record in 1:03.98.

Corning, led by Dray Carl, finished ninth. Carl was third in the 800, fourth in the 200 and 400 and fifth in the 100. James Johannes took fourth-place honors in the shot put and discus and Tyler Ogburn was fourth in the 800.

East Union placed 11th with one point and Lenox finished last without any score.

Girls meet

The POI girls meet was looked at as a four-team race heading in between Mount Ayr, Corning, Interstate 35 and Martensdale-St. Marys.

In the end, it was no contest, as the I-35 Roadrunners rolled to the league title with 142 points, well ahead of runner-up M-SM’s total of 103. Corning and defending champion Mount Ayr finished third and fourth, respectively.

Corning had four championship efforts on its own track.

Kristen Carmichael was impressive in taking the gold in the 1,500 and 3,200. She pulled away from Holly McKinney of I-35 and teammate Tiffany Shepherd early in the 3,200 and coasted to victory in a personal-best time of 10:58.21.

“I just wanted to start out at a pace I could maintain and just run my race,” Carmichael said after the 3,200. “It’s nice, especially being able to win a conference title and set a p.r. in front of my family and friends. It means a lot to me.”

Carmichael and Shepherd finished 1-2 in the 1,500 and Shepherd finished second to four-time POI champion Bailey Myer of Mount Ayr in the 800.

Lady Raider Caitlyn Stroud, fresh off an appearance at the Drake Relays, won the 100 with a time of 12.64. She pulled away from Central Decatur freshman Caitlyn Saxton midway through the race and never looked back.

“That CD girl was with me for a while, but after about 25 meters, I didn’t see anybody,” Stroud said.

East Union’s Mariah Kruse false started and was disqualified from the 100. The Eagle finished second in the 200 and helped the Eagle 4x100 team place second.

Stroud picked up another gold when she anchored the winning 4x200 with Taylor Gaule, Amber Longabaugh and Sydney Maynes.

Myer was Mount Ayr’s lone champion and also ran on the runner-up 4x800 and 4x400 relay teams. The Raiderette 4x200 relay team also won silver.

The East Union shuttle hurdle relay team joined Kruse in the 200 and the Eagle 4x100 team as a runner-up finisher.

Nodaway Valley finished seventh in the team race, East Union was eighth and Lenox was 12th.

The Wolverine 4x800 and sprint medley relay teams placed third for the team’s top finishes, while Blythe Beck finished sixth in the long jump for Lenox’s lone point.
