MCPHERSON —Two Burlington Northern Santa Fe crew members, both of Creston, were killed Sunday morning near Red Oak when their coal train rear-ended another BNSF train carrying maintenance equipment.
The accident occured at about 7 a.m. in McPherson, located six miles west of Red Oak.
Reports from Gus Melonas, director of public affairs for BNSF, indicated 10 cars on the maintenance train derailed, as well as one of the three locomotives on the coal trains. Some cars were on their sides, and maintenance equipment was scattered Sunday morning. The crash also started a fire that effected both trains.
"This is an extremely tragic situation for everyone involved," Melonas said.
Melonas added, the names of the accidents victims are being withheld pending notification of family until Monday morning.
